Late Game Surge from Arizona Wins Game 2

By Andrew Kovalchuk, MLB.com Journalist, April 23, 2014

CHICAGO- The Cubs (8-11) may have had their best offensive game this season, but the pitching is what did them in as the Diamondbacks (13-10) capitalized off the mistakes to win 7-4.

Both pitchers, Jake Arrieta (0-1) and Wade Miley (2-0) pitched scoreless through five, although Miley had to leave due to an injury and was replaced by Trevor Cahill. Another notable injury occurred in the fourth when Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney was drilled in the hand by a line drive and had to leave the game in obvious pain.

Arizona got the first runs in the sixth, when Paul Goldschmidt cracked a deep fly with one on that made it into the stands. The D-Backs would add one more, and the Cubs found themselves in a deep hole.

Mike Olt's first major league home run would, however, bring the Cubs back into it, and with the bases loaded, a double from Welington Castillo would clear the bases to give the Cubs the lead.

It didn't stand, though, as relief pitcher Blake Parker would give up four runs to put the D-Backs back in the lead. Addison Reed would finish off the game for his seventh save of the season.
