Diamondbacks Blank Cubs

CHICAGO- It was a pivotal game for both Chicago (8-10) and Arizona (12-10), and both pitching staffs played like it. But in the end, one team pulled away from the other.

The first five innings came and went for both teams. Although the Diamondbacks were able to get a few extra-base hits, Jason Hammel (0-2) held them at bay. The Cubs were less offensive-minded, as Brandon McCarthy (1-0) held them to one hit.

In the fifth, the D-Backs scored first after Tony Campana singled and stole second. A grounder and sacrifice fly from first baseman Paul Goldschmidt would plate him.

The Cubs brought in the bullpen to keep it close, but they opened it up, making the game 4-0 Arizona, and the Cubs could not even tack one run on the scoreboard.

With the series tied 1-1, games 3 and 4 loom tomorrow and the 24th.
