Cubs Dominate Yankees in 9-0 Shutout
By Andrew Kovalchuk, MLB.com Journalist, April 15, 2014
NEW YORK- The Cubs (5-7) were searching for a win today to build on their good performance last week. They would take on the Yankees (6-7) in interleague play.
The Cubs would take rookie Bruce Billings (0-0), getting his first start in MLB. He had been called up to replace the injured C.C. Sabathia, but the Cubs took him to task in the first. Emilio Bonifacio singled and stole 2nd, and a line drive from Starlin Castro into the outfield hole would score the first run. Cubs starter Chris Rusin (0-1) would get the start, filling in for Edwin Jackson, who has been rested following a near-injury scare in his last start. However, in a bizarre twist, Rusin would leave the field in the bottom of the 3rd after apparently injuring his pectoral quite badly.
Jackson would not get a rest as he was called in. However, any doubts about him being 100% were quelled as he went seven innings and allowed no runs. He and Travis Wood have stood out early on in a rotation that's been shaky to say the least.
The Cubs began to pour on more offense in the 4th when the catcher Welington Castillo homered. With Billings' first start in MLB not going five innings, the relievers were summoned to hold the Cubs at two. But in the fifth, the Cubs scored four runs, three coming off a moon shot from 1B Anthony Rizzo. In the sixth and seventh, three more came across.
It had to be a good day from Cubs outfielder Ryan Sweeney, who went 4-for-5 and drove across one run. He looks to assert himself in the lineup with the recent struggles of some of the Cubs' other outfielders. The problems were exemplified by Justin Ruggiano, who could not manage a hit. Many of the Yankees' players managed a hit, but none could come around to score. However, Jacoby Ellsbury went 0-for-4, and is currently boasting a .180 average in the early days of the season.
Game 2 is tomorrow. Catch it on ESPN.
