Wainwright Pitches Shutout as Cards Take Series

ST. LOUIS- The Cubs (4-6) were shut out today by a masterful performance from Cardinals' (3-7) pitcher Adam Wainwright (0-2).

The Cubs couldn't get anything going in the early innings. On the other side of the ball, the Cardinals jumped on Chicago starter Jeff Samardzija (1-1), scoring one in the first and four in the second. Samardzija would hit the showers early as Edwin Jackson was called in to pitch, but he too gave up four runs in the third. By the time the dust settled it was 9-0 Cardinals.

Wainwright continued his masterful performance and pitched a complete game, only allowing a hit to Ryan Sweeney. At the end, Wainwright had this to say: "I feel great and it was great out there. It's a nice way to recover after two losses."

"Nice" may be putting it a little two mildly after a one-hitter. Game 3 is Sunday.
