Monster 6th Inning Leads Brewers to Victory

By Andrew Kovalchuk, MLB.com Journalist, April 25, 2014

MILWAUKEE- The first I-94 series of the new season did not disappoint, as the Cubs (9-12) and Brewers (12-10) squared off.

The Brewers took the lead in the very first inning after leadoff man Jean Segura homered, putting Travis Wood (3-0) in the hole early. On the other side of the ball, Brewers starter Marco Estrada (2-1) did not allow any runners on base until the third, when rookie 2B Javier Baez walked and stole second. A liner from C Welington Castillo would move Baez to 3rd, and when Emilio Bonifacio walked, it would become very promising indeed. However, Ryan Sweeney grounded into a tailor-made double play, and the Cubs came away with nothing. The Brewers would make them pay in the bottom of that very inning when they added another HR, this one a solo shot from Carlos Gomez.

The Cubs showed some signs of life when Anthony Rizzo doubled and Nate Schierholtz drove him around in the fourth. But the chance to tie the game, and the excitement around Baez's first major league hit, were dampened when Schierholtz was thrown out at home.

The next inning, Wood allowed a couple men on base, and was promptly pulled. But relief pitcher Carlos Villanueva didn't help matters, as he gave up four runs, capped off by a three-run HR from Mark Reynolds, making the game 6-1.

The Cubs would load the bases in the ninth in an attempt to make the game closer than it really was, but a groundout would end the game. To add insult to injury, loading the bases gave middling relief pitcher Michael Fiers the first save of his career and one that he really didn't earn.

Anthony Rizzo's 3-for-4 day with two extra-base hits was impressive, and he will hope to continue that production in the other two games of the series. Javier Baez's first hits also couldn't have come at a more impressive time, as he was 2-for-3, getting on base 3 times. Welington Castillo is finally looking to break out of his cold streak, and is doing just that with consecutive multiple-hit games. The Brewers didn't have any notable performers, but they will hope for better from Ryan Braun, who could not manage a hit today.

Games 2 and 3 follow tomorrow and Sunday.
