With high expectations under new coach Rob Chudzinski, the Browns played very well in their season opener. The running game was great, as Trent Richardson rushed for 120 yards, and Brandon Jackson ran for 60 more. Brandon Weeden started off very poorly, completing just 3 of his first 10 passes. As the game went on, he was able to get more protection from the offensive line, and he began making more accurate throws. Although he did not throw for any touchdowns, his second half performance was encouraging. Overall, the defense was fantastic, causing five turnovers, and holding the Dolphins to just 10 points.
After two disappointing losses against division rivals, the Bengals came out against the Redskins with much more intensity and desire to win. Andy Dalton looked very sharp, with a completion percent over 80, and with no turnovers. Opposing QB Robert Griffin III was not able to move the ball against a strong Bengals defense, as he and the Redskins were held to a single field goal in the second quarter.
Though the rushing performance by the Bengals wasn't great, it was their first game with over 100 yards on the ground. They are still looking for their first rushing TD on the year.
After being lit up for 78 points over their first two games, the Bengals will try to stop rookie QB Robert Griffin III in order to pick up their first win of the season. Linebacker Thomas Howard is expected to play, and he should add a much needed boost to their run defense. It is also important that the Bengals improve their run game, as they are 31st in rush yards.
Once again, the Bengals got out to an early lead, and once again, they couldn't hold on to finish. It was difficult for defensive players to keep up due to the pouring rain, which led to many big plays. The Bengals were forced to abandon the run game early, becuase of its ineffectiveness, and because they were behind the entire second half. The Bengals started a comeback when Mohamed Sanu caught a touchdown, but on the next play, Browns HB Trent Richardson ran for a 44 yard touchdown to seal the game. Andy Dalton had a good game overall, but two costly interceptions were too much for the Browns to overcome, as they lost 38-28.
Both of these teams will try to improve to 1-1 in the first Battle of Ohio of 2012. The Bengals will certainly be hungry for a win after their narrow defeat to the division-rival Ravens, but without LB Thomas Howard, will their defense be able to stop rookie RB Trent Richardson?
Bengals Lose in Heartbreaking Fashion on Monday Night
After Joe Flacco turned it over on each of the first two Ravens offensive plays(one fumble, one interception), it looked like the Bengals would run away with the game. The visiting Bengals got out to an early 16-0 lead, and showed no signs of slowing down, leading 26-10 at halftime. The Ravens kept fighting in the third quarter, and finally had the opportunity to win in the 4th quarter. Down by six, the Ravens needed to move the ball 72 yards in 1:48 with no timeouts remaining to win the game. With 28 seconds left, and with the ball on Cincinnati's 28 yard line, Joe Flacco found an unguarded Anquan Boldin in the back of the endzone to tie the game. Ryan Longwell's extra point gave the Ravens the lead, and they held on to complete their huge comeback.
BREAKING NEWS: The Bengals have fired head coach Marvin Lewis, and have hired little-known Bobby Hill. Hill has repotedly never coached above the high school level of football, but the Bengals must have been impressed by his two state championships, so they ave him a chance.
Twitter:
The coaching carousel is always in effect, and now Bobby Hill is a part of it. #Bengals
Coach Marvin Lewis led the Bengals to the playoffs last year, but apparently that wasn't enough for him to keep his job.
