Washington D.C. -- After losing two of their first three games of the season against the Milwaukee Brewers, the Braves looked for a good pitching performance from David Hale, in just his second year in the Majors and his first start of the season.
Hale delivered for Atlanta, pitching 9 innings, giving up 4 runs (all in the 8th inning), and earning the 5-4 victory for Atlanta.
Nate McLouth and Jayson Werth both drove in runs for the Nats in the 8th inning, giving the Nationals a 4-1 advantage going into the top of the 9th. The Braves scored one run in the 9th before Dan Uggla hit a shallow fly ball into right field that got through the glove of Bryce Harper, tying the game for the Braves and handing Nationals closer Rafael Soriano his first blown save of the season. Evan Gattis took the first pitch of the inning from Drew Storen into the Nats' bullpen, scoring the decisive run of the game and pulling out the win for the Braves. Craig Kimbrel picked up his second save in three chances with a perfect bottom of the 10th.
"Sometimes things go your way," said manager Fredi Gonzalez after the win, "and today, we caught a break and took advantage of it. These type of things are bound to happen with a 162-game schedule." The Braves look to Opening Day starter Julio Teheran to put up another Cy Young-like performance on Saturday night against Taylor Roark for the Nationals.

(Milwaukee)- Aaron Harang looked to impress in his Braves debut in the rubber game of a 3-game set in Milwaukee. Impress he did. Harang pitched 7 innings of 1 run ball along with 8 strikeouts. On his performance, Harang said that he "did well" but has "a few good kinks to straighten out." If this outing was not Aaron Harang's best stuff, Braves fans should be excited. Harang left with a 5-1 lead, but a pair of Braves errors in the 8th inning chased home 3 runs, 2 of which were unearned for Luis Avilan. The Braves escaped the 8th with the lead, when Jason Heyward caught a sinking line drive in right field and then fired a bullet home to prevent Segura from scoring the tying run. Craig Kimbrel surrendered his first blown save, giving up a triple to Jean Segura that scored the tying run. The Braves could not get anything going during extra innings, and the Brewers scored the winning run from third on an Evan Gattis error with 2 outs, his second error of the ballgame. David Carpenter was the bad luck loser, with his defense letting him down when it mattered most. The Braves begin another series after a day off against the Washington Nationals, in Washington D.C. David Hale makes his season debut against Gio Gonzalez for the Nats.

After a low scoring victory in game 1 of the series, the Atlanta Braves looked to go ahead and put the series away in Milwaukee. Chris Johnson hit a deep fly ball in the 1st inning that was botched by Braun, giving the Braves a 1-0 lead, and giving Garza an unearned run. In the top of the 5th, Johnson stroked a double into the left-center gap, scoring Alex Wood and B.J. Upton, and giving the Braves a 3-0 lead. Alex Wood was dominant through 6 innings, giving the Braves six shutout innings before allowing two baserunners on in the bottom of the 7th inning. Rookie reliever Gus Schlosser was brought in to face Brewers catcher Jonathon Lucroy. Lucroy took a mistake fastball into the left field seats, tying the game at 3-3. Fast forward to the bottom of the 10th, when Jordan Walden was pulled after giving up a leadoff pinch-hit single to Hunter Morris, handing the ball off to long reliever Anthony Varvaro. Varvaro lost control giving up a hit and walking two men, to set up Ryan Braun with the bases loaded and two outs. On a 3-2 count, Varvaro could not command his fastball, walking the winning run for the Brewers in from 3rd. Varvaro was tagged with the loss while Michael Fiers picked up the win for the Brewers.
The Braves play the rubber game of the three game set with the Brewers next, with veteran Aaron Harang making his Braves debut up against longtime Milwaukee ace Yovani Gallardo.

Ah. The smell of the grass is different during the regular season. The intensity of the crowd on Opening Day is unmatched, even playing on the road. The Atlanta Braves come into this season a bit flustered, with the loss of three key pitchers to Tommy John surgery during Spring Training. However, optimism is king in Atlanta, as fans look towards a young core of pitchers to step up in lieu of Kris Medlen, Brandon Beachy, and Cory Gearrin. To open the season, the Braves take on the Milwaukee Brewers, who are also looking at a promising season with the return of the now tainted Ryan Braun and a good set of veteran arms. Julio Teheran, the Braves' projected third starter, takes the mound with an unmatched confidence. Pitching for the Brewers is veteran journeyman Kyle Lohse. Lets take a look at how the game went:
Next up are the Brewers again, with a pitching matchup of the former UGA standout Alex Wood against the former Minnesota Twins prospect Matt Garza. Stay tuned for more posts and results. Thanks.
P.S. Special thanks to M.K. Knight for the release of the OSFM V.1 rosters, which led me to start this franchise.
