R.A. Dickey
Posted on August 13, 2010 at 11:14 PM.
Near no-hitter tonight, and his dream season continues.

I know it's probably too late for my Mets to mount a charge, and blogging about them seems an equally lost cause, but Dickey's season raises an interesting question:

Can a knuckleballer, at 35, begin a worthwhile pitching career?

Dickey is a free-agent at the end of the season, i believe. Would you sign him? And for what?

I think this guy - a lifetime journeyman - has earned himself a pretty substantial contract going forward.

I watch nearly every Mets game, and have seen him pitch a bunch this year. He has simply discovered something about pitching and himself. He was lights out at Buffalo (AAA) before coming up to the Mets - and now he has put together a season that should have been worth a 12-4 record at this point. Instead, he's 8-5 thanks to bullpen woes and an atrocious offense.

If I'm the Mets, I sign him. 3-5 million a year, for 2-3 years. (Keep in mind, the Mets pay Ollie Perez $12M per year!)

My feeling is, they can't afford not to!

Dump Ollie, dump Jerry, perhaps dump Beltran, sign Dickey, tell Bay to shape up, tell Wright that the season isn't done by the All Star break, let Ike do what Ike do, keep Frenchy just because he's a pretty chill guy, start F-Mart, have K-Rod go through the Jack Nicholson anger management class, don't let Santana near women, and we're pretty much set. Anyway, that's just venting from this damn season. Dickey is a brilliant knuckleballer, and just imagine how amazing it would look say a year from now, if Mejia progresses like he should, you'll have a Santana-Pelfrey 1-2 punch, followed by a Dickey knuckler, Mejia throwing nasty cutters and then Niese doing his thing. Sounds like a motley crew that can actually do something.
