Game 65: Yankees @ Mariners

Comeback kids do it again as Mariners end up cruising to sixth straight victory

Seattle - In what has become a theme during this winning streak, the Mariners again were able to come back late and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. This time they did it without the power surge they have enjoyed in previous games, and instead used timely, clutch hitting, and good plate discipline to their advantage. It started in the 8th inning, after David Phelps had been cruising all night long, building a 4-1 lead without barely breaking a sweat giving up only two hits, but Jesus Montero led off with a single, and that brought out Matt Thornton, who pretty much imploded the proceedings by immediately hitting John Buck, who replaced an injured Mike Zunino earlier in the game. The a James Jones sacrifice attempt turned into a single after he beat out the throw, and that's when it turned real sour for New York. Stefen Romero came on to pinch hit for Dustin Ackley, and immediately laced a single to cut it to 4-2, then Thornton walked Brad Miller to force in another run, and shortly after Endy Chavez lined a two run double to put the Mariners in the lead. Seattle would end up getting two more out of the inning before it was over, lining up Fernando Rodney for an easy save in the ninth. The Mariners will now try to continue the streak tomorrow, and get back to .500 for the first time since April 29th against C.C. Sabathia (6-4, 5.25 ERA) while throwing their own ace Felix Hernandez (6-6, 2.59 ERA) up against him.
