Fort Collins, CO -- In a shocking upset the 2-9 Virginia Cavaliers beat the #21 Colorado State Rams 27-22.
Virginia looked poised to end their year with a victory as they lead start to finish in the game.
Virginia was lead by a remarkable performance by Jr QB Michael Rocco who passed for 366 yards and 3 Touchdowns on 22 of 25 attempts, he didn't miss a pass until the 4th quarter of the game going 20-20 through the first 3 quarters. Sr Bobby Smith caught 5 passes for 113 yards and 2 touchdowns, whileJunior WR EJ Scott had 1 touchdown and 126 yards.
The Cavs coach commented to the press afterwards, "Rocco had an outstanding game, their secondary is no slouch and played a rough and tough game, but he still managed to find all though tight spaces to get the ball to the receivers."
Sr HB Torrey Mack ran for 97 yards on 19 carries, while backup Sr HB Dominique Wallace had 22 yards and a touchdown on the ground. "It definately feels nice to end my football career with a win. No complaints from me about that one." Mack said following the game.
Defensive End Jeremiah Mathis finished off his career with a 2 sack performance to lead the Virginia defense. FS Leonard Downs also added a sack for the Cavs.
"I think that this school has got some great building blocks in place, next year we should be able to prove ourselves in the ACC and I don't think we'll have any problems capturing a bowl birth." Rocco said about the future of the team.
"We wanted to win this one for the seniors on the team. I'm glad we could squeak out the victory, as I think if the game had another minute or two in it, that Colorado State could have scored, they had a strong momentum in the 4th from the crowd." Scott said about the momentum swing in the 2nd half.
For CSU, QB Pete Thomas was 17 of 26 passing for 307 yards and one touchdown. Chris Nwoke added 77 yards on the ground along with a TD. WR Bernard Blake had 113 yards and a TD catch to lead the CSU receivers.
Defensively Brandon McKnight added 2 sacks to his NCAA leading total, while adding another 2 tackles for a loss as he was a bright spot for the Rams today.
Colorado State coach Drew Gill said,"I think the guys were overlooking this Virginia game, which I thought was odd as it was senior day today, and we like to win one for the seniors on their day, but all week long I couldn't motivate the team to put in the effort like they have all season. There is going to be some butt kicking if they put forth this kind of effort in prep of our bowl game."
