The California Red Hawks came from behind in the fourth quarter to beat the Arizona Cardinals and pick up win number 1 in the 2011 season. The key point came late in the fourth quarter after Jake Locker connected with fellow rookie Julio Jones for a 26 yard touchdown when on the following kickoff, Austin Pettis lit up return man Steve Breaston forcing a fumble which the Red Hawks recovered. Jake Locker would once again find Julio Jones on a slant route giving them their first lead of the game. Despite having a career day, runningback John Clay committed a rookie mistake which almost cost his team the game. Trying to run out the clock, Clay fumbled the ball which the Cardinals picked up and returned for a 61 yard touchdown. The Red Hawks got the ball back and Jake Locker showed why he was the #4 pick in the draft as he led the team down the field and set up the game winning field goal from kicker Leigh Tiffin.

I created this team, The California Red Hawks as an expansion team using a "Balanced" roster. I went through each team and was allowed 1 player MINIMUM and 2 MAXIMUM from ever roster, swapping out each real player for one of the generic Balanced players. I could only take players who were 75 or below, not allowed to take anyone who is #1 or 2 on the depth chart at a given position. I went to SDSU for undergrad, USC for grad school, if a team had a player from either University who fit the criteria I had to select them. The only exception I could sign to someone who was higher than an 75 is if they were going to be a FA and the team had no chance of re-signing them and I only did this once (Shawn Merriman). The rest of the roster was filled via Free Agents. I simmed year 1 and then the team is under my control.

After the California Red Hawks first season in the NFL, they had a very successful draft in which many are claiming the best of the year. The Red Hawks had 10 total picks, 2 in the first, 2 in the second, 2 in the third, and 1 in each of the remaining rounds.
First Round (Pick #4) - Jake Locker - QB Washington
First Round (Pick #12) - Cameron Heyward - DE Ohio State
Second Round (Pick #12) - Julio Jones - WR Alabama
Second Round (Pick #30) - Prince Amakamura - CB Nebraska
Third Round (Pick #12) - Austin Pettis - WR Boise State
Third Round (Pick #19 - John Clay - RB Wisconsin
Fourth Round (Pick #12) - Colin Kaepernick - QB Nevada
Fifth Round (Pick #12) - Owen Marecic - FB/LB Stanford
Sixth Round (Pick #12) - Casey Matthews - LB Oregon
Seventh Round (Pick #12) - Ronald Johnson - WR USC
Many are praising the Red Hawks draft on the offensive side as they have added explosiveness at the Wide Receiver position, a bruising RB in John Clay and two quarterbacks who can run and throw in Locker and Kaepernick. Many are questioning why they drafted 2 but when you are a new team you have to battle it out. The only other quarterback on the roster is former USC great Matt Leinart who was the starter last season for the Red Hawks. However on the defensive side of the ball, although Heyward and Amakamura are expected to jump in and compete for immediate playing time, many believe they didn't address many weaknesses from the previous season and solely focused on players who can put points on the board during this draft. The Red Hawks first pre-season game is against Miami on the road.
