Don't Mess With The Texas Rangers - A MLB The Show 22 Franchise

The Texas Rangers haven't seen anything close to a winning season since 2016. In fact, since that season, the team has been one of the worst teams in the majors.

That includes 2021 where they went just 60-102. It turns out that last season was apparently the straw that broke the camel's back. Texas hired a new General Manager in Bo Vandy, who went on a spending spree that revamped and reshaped the Rangers roster both on offense and in the pitching staff.

Chief among the biggest moves Vandy made was agreeing to terms with 2B Marcus Semien on a seven-year contract and INF Corey Seager on a ten-year deal. The team also agreed to terms with RHP Jon Gray on a four-year contract. The moves just happened to all be done on the same day, just before the owners locked out the players.

Now that the lockout is over and teams are about to head to Spring Training, concerns over a lost season are also over.

The question now is whether or not Texas has added enough pieces to be a real contender in an AL West that includes a revamped Seattle Mariners, the always dangerous Houston Astros and a Los Angeles Angels team that is also hoping to compete.

Answers could come rather quickly as this year's Spring Training is going to be quite a bit quicker than in past years.

The Texas Rangers won just 60 games a year ago. They've already got three victories in 2022.

More interesting than a 3-1 start to the regular season is, that they managed to accomplish that against a team expected to compete for the AL East crown in the New York Yankees. Even more interesting still is that other than a wild 9-7 11 inning tilt, the Rangers pretty much dominated the series.

Texas Rangers 2022 Schedule
DATEOPPONENTRESULT
Mar 31vs New York YankeesWon, 4-1
Apr 1vs New York YankeesWon, 3-2
Apr 2vs New York YankeesLost, 9-7
Apr 3vs New York YankeesWon, 3-0

The Rangers had a lot of heroes in their opening series of the season, but right at the top of the list has to be several free agent signings that were brought in specifically to make the team better.

Jon Gray spun a gem on opening day, going six innings and striking out 7 while allowing just one hit and zero runs. Dane Dunning managed to have a similarly dominant performance in game two of the series and another new addition, Kohei Arihara spun a gem in the fourth game of the series, going five innings, allowing three hits and two walks, but no runs while striking out eight.

The only blemish on the Rangers record so far this year, looked like it might allow Texas to make a clean sweep of the team's first four games.

Trailing 6-1 in the bottom of the ninth, the Rangers managed to score 5 runs to tie it up and almost won it on their final at bat, but Corey Seager was thrown out at home to end the inning.

The Yankees' bats, which wouldn't score a total of 9 runs over the other three games in the series, did manage to outlast Texas in extra frames and eventually won 9-7.

Starting pitching wasn't the only bright spot for Texas. It also appears the team has found it's closer of the present and the future. Danny Santana has allowed extra one base runner in three outings while striking out six and recording three saves.

He's anchored a bullpen that has shown some leaks here and there, but appeared to be starting to find its footing when four relievers combined to pitch four shutout innings in the fourth and final game of the season opening series.

Offensively, Seager and Marcus Semien have performed exactly as new general manager Bo Vandy could have hoped. Semien has started the season hitting .353 with a double with 4 RBI one double and two stolen bases.

Corey Seager has added a .313 average with two doubles, and two RBI.

One unheralded pickup, former Philadelphia Phillies player Brad Miller is making them both look average in comparison. Miller is hitting .417 on the young season with one homer a double and 4 RBI.

The same can be said for new catcher Mitch Garver who has started the season hitting .538 with a double and two RBI.

If there's one thing that might be a bit of a surprise when it comes to the Rangers offense so far, it's been the lack of homeruns. So far the team has just one in four games.

It's worth noting that while the team is 3-1, it's scored more than 4 runs only once so far, and that could be a sign that eventually the sluggers are going to need to slug even more, if Texas wants to keep rolling.

Next up for Texas is a trip away from home, starting with a three game set against the Florida Marlins before heading north of the border to Toronto to face off against the Bluejays.
