GB 2021: A Packers Franchise

2021 Packers Preview

All Madden Difficulty

13min Quarters

Sliders: Matt10

With the 2021 season set to begin, this Packers team faces many questions as they get ready to embark on another journey in search of their 14th Championship.

Matt Lafleur enters his third season as head coach coming off back-to-back NFC Championship appearances. Expectations remain high even for a coach only in his 3rd season. With Aaron Rodgers at the helm and a cast of stars around him, Coach Lafleur's Packers have their goals set on a Super Bowl run.

Offense

We expect big things again from an offense anchored by reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers and returning nearly all of its starters from a year ago

Aaron Jones will be highly featured in both the running and passing game, while 2nd year back AJ Dillon will provide an added punch with his bruising style of running.

The WR room will be led by All Pro WR Davante Adams coming off of a career year in which he caught an NFL best 18 TD's. Marquez Valdez Scantling and Allen Lazard will need to provide balance so that teams cannot focus solely on Adams. In addition, Green Bay is bringing back Randall Cobb to see if he can reignite some magic with his old buddy Aaron Rodgers.

Protecting Aaron Rodgers is one of the NFL's best offensive lines.

LT David Bakhtiari is as good as it gets and Elgton Jenkins is not far off that path. Those two should anchor Rodgers' blindside and provide plenty of protection for the left side of the line. The right side leaves room for some skepticism. RT Billy Turner can be inconsistent at times, while RG Lucas Patrick has not been great at times. Turner and Patrick will need to be at their best all season for this line to be elite. Rookie C Josh Myers will have big shoes to fill after the departure of Pro Bowl C Corey Linsley. Keep a close eye on Myers early in the season. Meyers will be given the starting job, but Lucas Patrick or Elgton Jenkins could step in if Meyers struggles early. Providing depth on the line are Tackles Dennis Kelly and Yosh Nijman and Guards Jon Runyan and Royce Newman.

Defense

Easily one of the biggest question marks this is how will this defense perform under new DC Joe Berry? The talent is certainly there. The results we will have to wait and see

Up front the Packers will Kenny Clark, Dean Lowry and Kinglsey Keke manning the interior of the line. TJ Slayton and Tyler Lancaster could also spell the DL at times.

Joe Berry has a three headed monster in Rashan Gary and the Smith brothers to rush the passer with. Expect a variety of different looks to get these three involved in the attack.

Interior LBs Krys Barnes and De'Vondre Campbell will need to provide stability for a Green Bay defense who struggles against the run. They are not very deep at ILB either with Ty Summers and Oren Burks mostly contributing on special teams.

Green Bay's secondary is one the best positional groups on the roster. Safeties Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage provide stability and and playmaking on the back end, and CB Jaire Alexander is among the NFL's elite shutdown corners. Kevin King and Chandon Sullivan both have plenty of NFL snaps in their career, but the production has not always been there. 1st Rd. draft pick Eric Stokes may be thrust into a starting role if either Sullivan or King struggle in coverage.

I'll be interested to see what you do with Rodgers long-term and if you decide to add anyone to the defensive line or the wide receiver room. Go Pack Go!

Keys to the Game

Packers

Stop the run
The Saints boasted the NFL's 6th best rushing attack in 2020 and I would anticipate Sean Payton will look to give the ball to Alvin Kamara early and often. Especially against a Packers defense that struggles to stop the run. Krys Barnes and newly acquired LB De'Vondre Campbell will be tasked with containing Kamara and this rushing attack. Campbell missed the entire preseason with a sprained AC joint but practiced all week and is probable for today's game.

Takeaways
Green Bay's defense struggled last year to take the ball away from opponents and new DC Joe Berry wants to see improvement in this area of his defense. A matchup against Jameis Winston could be a good opportunity as long as Green Bay can capitalize on their chances.

Protection
In order to keep the Packers offense on the field it will be up to the Green Bay offensive line to keep a clean pocket around Aaron Rodgers. Expect Bakhtiari and Jenkins to hold up the blind side. Lucas Patrick, Billy Turner and rookie C Josh Myers will need to provide assistance against Cam Jordan and a stout Saints defensive front.

Saints

Contain Davante Adams
When it comes to stopping Green Bays high powered offense, the first priority is taking away Davante Adams. New Orleans needs to force Aaron Rodgers off his favorite target and make him rely on less talented options. If Adams has a big day, it could spell trouble for the Saints.

Time of Possession
The best way to neutralize MVP Aaron Rodgers is to keep him on the sideline. Sean Payton needs to get his ground game going behind Alvin Kamara and keep his offense in favorable down and distance to move the chains and dominate time of possession.

Pressure Aaron Rodgers
When Aaron Rodgers is on the field, the Saints need to make him uncomfortable. New Orleans have shown they have the ability to get after the quarterback as well as anybody. They must also keep the Superdome crowd in the game and make life difficult for Aaron Rodgers.

Re: GB 2021: A Packers Franchise

Final
Packers 14
Saints 24

The Packers dropped their season opener at New Orleans on Sunday. It was a game that was anyone's for the taking in the 4th quarter and New Orleans took advantage of mistakes and seized the opportunity. Green Bay took the lead just before half on an Aaron Rodgers touchdown pass to Davante Adams, their second scoring strike of the day. The Saints opened up the 4th quarter with a touchdown run from Jameis Winston to tie the game 14-14.
The Packers offense was driving back down the field and looked poised to come away with some points but AJ Dillon had the ball ripped out by Marcus Davenport. Jameis led them down the field and Alvin Kamara capped off the scoring drive with a 1 yard TD run.
With two minutes to go and needing a score, Aaron Rodgers was intercepted on the sideline by C.J Gardner Johnson. This was the final nail in the coffin for Green Bay as the Saints would kick a field goal to seal the 24-14 victory.
In the end, both teams played pretty well. But turnovers ended up costing the Packers. Green Bay's final three possessions of the game ended in a turnover. Head Coach Matt Lafleur noted " three turnovers to end the game is certainly not a winning formula. We have to take better care of the ball and we know that."
