Game way too dark in HDR game mode

I just got my ps5 and hoped maybe this would change things but no.

I have an LG C7 Oled.

So after having read numerous posts on reddit and what not the HDR game option on the C7 is basically ruined by LG itself after an update a few years ago

Is it that SDS has some strange HDR settings built in or what?

Hoping The Show 21 looks better in HDR...
With that TV it shouldn't look like that. But I think it's the game and not your TV. I assume you set up HDR in the system settings. There has been an HDR issue with the Show for a while. Some people with very bright TV's end up with a washed out picture. For me it works great. I have an X900F so it's gets plenty bright enough. It peaks at around 1K nits, so I think The Show has some kind of determined HDR setting that is optimal at around 1000 nits. But again, I think it's the game. There are no HDR settings so you can't change anything.

That's really the only thing I can think of. I think the peak brightness of your TV is around 700 nits. And with being an OLED, it should give you fairly good HDR.

Yeah you might be right. The C7 peaks at around 700 indeed. The first HDR year for The Show they had a slider where you could adjust the HDR effect which was pretty cool but I didn’t have the TV I have now so no idea if that would’ve worked.

Having said that I just turned off the HDR checker box in the PS5 system menu as a whole and everything looks better now. So even the Playstation menu and CoD looked dark and dull with HDR on.

Is it something I have to change in my game mode HDR settings? I mean this tv doesn’t hit 1000 nits but I don’t think it should look this bad...

In standard mode it looks great but the lag is too high then.

Re: Washed out menu/game with HDR

Make sure HDR in tv settings are off.

You should be able to use HDR on the game I have been and love it on my QLED.

Then calibrate hdr settings on ps5 menu.

With mlb the show game settings under audio video turn in HDR there and now we can run highest resolution now.

If all fails I highly suggest looking up your model tv and a guy named DARKO on YouTube for calibration settings.

He does it for movie and games.

Hmmm I’m pretty sure HDR settings are off when I select game mode.

I’ll make a picture of the difference in colour en brightness of the PS5 home menu when HDR is on or off from the system menu.

Thanks for thinking along.

Re: Washed out menu/game with HDR

While it's gotten a lot better, especially in the last year, HDR is still a mess of a standard, and inconsistent results between games/equipment is just a part of the process. Until all developers and TV manufacturers get on the same page, stuff like this is going to happen.

It does sound like a data transfer issue, which could potentially be solved with tv or PlayStation settings, or ensuring you have the right cable (HDMI 2.1).

However it's just as likely it's just one of those random quirks. HDR has still yet to reach proper maturation.

And another problem I have is the advertisement of HDR on crappy Walmart TV's. When we all know none of them get bright enough for real HDR.

Re: Washed out menu/game with HDR

My Sony had this issue back when they first came out with HDR and had the slider..

Since they removed it and made it universal. Mine is stunning but people with better TVs have had this issue.

I agree it’s the game and given it’s tuned one for all, kind of hit or miss whether it looks good with your exact set. They need to add the slider back but make sure it’s working properly.
