Is 2k21 worth it?

I have had Rory McIlroy for a few years but never committed to playing it. I have started playing over the past couple weeks and I am really enjoying it. My question is now that you can pick up 2k21 for $30 is it a big upgrade? Is it a much better game than the Rory game? Thank you

I can recommend it at $30 on a PS4/PS5 right now, with a few reservations. I like the tempo component that's required in the swing interface, as it entails much more feel and variability to swing control than RMPGAT every had... it was more of a dial and flick fest, IMO, if you used the analog stick swing. I'm not into 3-click swings so I never tried RMPGAT's click swing, but many say it was one of the best.

The big reservation I have about PGA TOUR 2K21 on the PS4 Pro and XBox One X is their frame rates are locked at 30 FPS. Furthermore, if you've already upgraded to a PS5 or a Series X, the game is still locked at 30 FPS. Both of these next-gen consoles could run this game at 60 FPS +, if they would just allow an option to disable the vsync, or set it to 60 Hz, as they've done on the PC version. I don't know why they haven't done it yet, but maybe it's coming in an update I know they're working on.

If you can get your senses to adapt to the game's tempo demands at 30 FPS, as a good many seem to be able to do, then go for it at 30 FPS... just don't ever play the PC version on a rig that can run it at 60 FPS - it's a much better game at the higher frame rate, with so more more tactile feedback. I can no longer play the XBox One X version, after playing it on my PC at 60 FPS. My scoring average on Pro difficulty is 1.7 strokes lower on the PC version than it is in Pro-Am on the XBox One X version, because I find the tempo so much harder to regulate at the slower frame rate.

Not really sure I gave you an answer you can hang your hat on, but at $30, I can say you'd be getting a game that's more rewarding than Rory, even with the tempo management problems at 30 FPS.

To me, the biggest selling point is the insane amount of courses available (both real and fictional).

If you’re into a career mode with real pros, Rory can’t be beat

Also I personally think Rory looks better.

Gonna pull the trigger for $30 on Steam ... doubt it will get lower any time soon. Didn't like any past iteration all that much, especially the super sensitive short game. I'll try to give a fresh impression on gameplay in that thread later. I really don't care all that much about career mode or commentary (when you're playing in an actual game, you don't hear commentators anyway, so I never use them).

Re: Is 2k21 worth it?

For $30, the game is worth it...I got it for $40 at release and am happy with that fact. But there are things to consider...

If you're expecting an immersive career mode, be warned. The AI scoring is glitchy and causes the immersion to fizzle out very quickly. I haven't played career mode in a month or so now. And that's my usual go-to mode. Another career mode negative that works against 2K21 is the lack of any licensed majors. But 2K21 does offer a sizeable amount of real courses that do have real events tied to them, and are presented well in the game. Examples include the Tour Championship, The Players, the Genesis Invitational, and the John Deere Classic.

If you're getting the game to play with friends for societies, for TGC Tours, to play a lot of user created courses, or to create courses of your own, $30 makes sense.

I think RMPGAT is the best looking golf game I've ever seen. I would have loved to have had TW 13 or 14's swing interface and TW 10's putting interface and presentation in Rory. I'd still be playing it today if that were the case!

You won't regret it, I don't think. Sans the dreadfully bad pitching game (I just flat out don't play pitch shots in this game), the rest of the short game in 2K21 pretty good. I find the chipping better this year, although I still think they could make it more proportional in feel.

If your PC can run this game at 60 FPS in 4K, you're in for a real treat. I've never played a game in my life that got more of a boost, going from 30 to 60 FPS than this one. I cannot make myself play the XBox One X version again now, having tasted it on my PC... I just wish I could have got my copy at $30, versus the $60 I paid for it, but I can't say I haven't gotten my money's worth out of it.
