Next Gen Motion Blur Setting

I am on PS5 and was just curious what the motion blur setting does in the game. It is set at 50, anyone mess around with this?

Most noticeable in replays and in game cut scenes. Adds a blur effect.

the way to think of it would be to use a film analogy. In film it's almost always 24fps. Creatively you can alter the SHUTTER SPEED. This will give you different effects. Saving Private Ryan in the fighting scenes had a very fast shutter speed. That makes the action punchy and gritty and makes it so that in fast moving objects they are never smeared or out of focus, always crips. If you pause at any second you'll see a crisp image.

Until that movie and many other films use slower shutter speeds, it's common to use a shutter speed which is double the frame-rate, especially in dialogue scenes (48 opening and closing/sec). A major benefit is that you gain more light getting into the camera. But each exposure is longer meaning any movement in that given frame will be captured. That will cause motion blurring, but motion blurring also gives a greater sense of smoothness and continuity. It allows one to appreciate the movement rather than the speed because faster shutter speed increases the speed sensation too - it looks more 'hyper'.

So 2k does this in cut-scenes, replays, cut-aways etc. They do this to mask the drop down to 30fps because I believe that transition will look less jarring. 30fps is standard TV format like Seinfeld for example. So if the game is running 60, then drops to 30 - no matter what you will notice it. 60fps is more like 'soap-opera effect' when HDTV's were advertising and pushing 'clear motion' and things like that. Great for gaming - crappy for movies (imo).

So to answer your question bluntly - in my opinion they are just trying to mask the drop in fps and make it less jarring. Whether that strategy is successful is ultimately left to the user's opinion. I notice it, it doesn't bother me but I might shut it off
