Madden 21 what button do you hold down on defense for the CPU to take control?

What button do you hold for the CPU to take control of your defensive player? Am I missing something? I think it's L1 on the playstation but whichever guy I use that on defense, he busts his assignment. He moves but never to where he should be on the play. For example, if I call cover 3 and use the safety that should be covering the deep middle third. I hold L1 and he starts covering someone man to man. And not just someone running into his zone. He will almost run up to the line of scrimmage and start covering someone man to man. I've tried it with different players and if seems to be the same result.

Seems broken to me. I liked letting the CPU control the defense but that just leads to blown coverages now. I've resorted to just usering a D lineman now.
