USF hires Francois as head football coach
Associated Press

Tampa, FL – The University of South Florida has hired Kansas State co-offensive coordinator Malcolm Jean-Jacques Francois as its new head football coach.

Francois last coached at Kansas State where he shared play-calling duties with Del Miller before taking over as the sole play caller last season despite sharing the title of offensive coordinator with Miller.

This marks a return to South Florida for Francois as he was part of the university's first ever football team back in 1997 under head coach Jim Leavitt. Francois was a standout receiver for North Miami Beach High School but lost interest from many high-profile programs due to academic struggles. He ultimately committed to play for Leavitt and the Bulls. After redshirting his freshman year, Francois would lead the team in receptions for his final two seasons before signing with the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent.

Francois spent one year in the NFL with the Bengals before his former coach Leavitt offered him a chance to return to South Florida as a graduate assistant. Francois was part of an offensive staff that led upsets over top-25 ranked teams such as West Virginia, Kansas, Florida State as well as the 2007 team's ascension into a #2 BCS ranking. Following Leavitt's dismissal at South Florida, Francois was hired by Kansas State head coach Bill Snyder, who Leavitt worked under prior to arriving at South Florida.

Francois replaces Skip Holtz, who was fired last Sunday. The Bulls completed the 2012 campaign, their third under Holtz's direction, with a 3-9 record. South Florida went just 5-16 in Big East play and 16-21 overall during Holtz's tenure, which began in January of 2010 after the university hired the 48-year- old following a successful five-year stint with East Carolina.

Playing Career
  • South Florida (1997-2001)
  • Cincinnati Bengals (2002)

  • 2003 South Florida (Recruiting Coordinator)
  • 2004-2005 South Florida (Offensive Assistant)

Re: Strength in Unity.

Can USF hang on to four-stars Corbett and Ward?
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Despite back-to-back losing seasons, the recruiting cupboard for newly hired head coach Malcolm Francois isn't bare. USF currently has 7 verbal commitments in the class, including four-star defensive end Sheldon Corbett and running back Leon Ward.

Corbett and Ward received bumps in the rankings following successful junior campaigns with both earning their fourth star this summer. This has brought Florida State and Miami into the picture for Ward while Georgia Tech and Mississippi State are the latest Power 5 schools to come sniffing around for Corbett.

Francois' recruiting prowess and youthful exuberance are why USF made the hire. Will he be able to turn that into a formidable debut class?

2013 USF Recruiting Board
Quarterbacks
#16 QB-PP Grant Oliver | 6'2", 219lbs | Panthersville, GA | 3-star | UNC, USF, IOWA, CAL, WISC
#98 QB-DT James Wilson | 6'6", 220lbs | Villa Rica, GA | 2-star | USF, NEV, TAMU, TEMPLE, CLEM

USF is all-in on Oliver as their quarterback for this class. The Georgia product is limited as an athlete and doesn't have the greatest accuracy but in terms of prototypical size and arm, Oliver is a good take for the Bulls if they're able to make some ground up against North Carolina. Wilson is a decent backup option if they strike out on Oliver as his size and athleticism makes things interesting.

Running back
#11 HB Leonard Ward | 6'0", 186lbs | Fort Lauderdale, FL | 4-star | USF, FSU, MIA, UCF [verbal commit]
#53 HB Richard Miller | 6'2", 217lbs | Tuscaloosa, AL | 3-star | USF, UNC, ILLINOIS, ALABAMA
#63 HB Brett Horton | 6'1", 184lbs | Moultrie, GA | 3-star | USF, GSU, UGA, NCST, FIU

In a perfect world, USF signs all three but that likely won't happen and can't happen with proper roster management in mind. USF is in for a dog fight with Ward, a fight they'll likely lose once the big dogs come knocking hard on Ward's door. Horton at this point isn't a good take in my opinion but if they lose Ward and maybe even Miller as well, USF could do much worse than taking in Horton.

Wide Receiver
#39 WR Tyrone Gibbons | 6'3", 207lbs | Eustis, FL | 4-star | USF, SOUTH CAROLINA, UCF, MISS. ST, OLE MISS [verbal commit]
#70 WR Chris Walker | 6'4", 198lbs | West Augusta, GA | 3-star | UGA, USF, NCSTATE

Gibbons is another four-star in the deck currently for USF and yet again, they'll need to fight to keep him. Walker is a Georgia lean but the Bulldogs aren't ready to accept his commitment. If USF can make some headway while Georgia decides, they might be able to flip him.

Offensive Line
#14 C Shane Moore | 6'4", 303lbs | Pinellas Park, FL | 3-star | FIU, USF, FAU, SOUTH ALABAMA, GSU
#24 C Phil Horne | 6'0", 277lbs | Vestavia Hills, AL | 3-star | TROY, FSU, USF, MIA
#76 T Terry Scales | 6'3", 315lbs | Farmington, MI | 3-star | IOWA, USF, ILLINOIS, TEMPLE, UCONN
#119 T David Mitchell [juco] | 6'6", 333lbs | Valdosta, GA | 2-star | USF, ILLINOIS, FSU, IOWA [verbal commit]

Going after out-of-state linemen that Iowa is also recruiting might be a good strategy for Francois. Mitchell is yet another Georgia kid on the Bulls' recruiting board. If they can keep Mitchell in the class as a plug-and-play JUCO signee and then add Scales as a project at right tackle, this is a good haul on the offensive line.

The only in-state kid on the offensive line might be the most important one and that's Moore. Moore grades out as a borderline three-star that with a few bumps, can easily find himself as a four star.

Defensive Line
#14 DE Sheldon Corbett | 6'7", 237lbs | Miami, FL | 4-star | USF, UCF, GT, TROY, MISS STATE [verbal commit]
#113 DE Travis Elbert | 6'2", 242lbs | Maryville, TN | 3-star | TEN, USF, USC, UCONN, NEV
#121 DE David Conley | 6'4", 244lbs | Elroy, NC | 3-star | TEX, USF, NEV, USC, UCONN
#70 DT Ross Barron | 6'2", 293lbs | Miami, FL | 3-star | UNC, USF, FIU, WVU
#53 DT Kris Whitaker | 6'7", 280lbs | Sweetwater, FL | 3-star | FAU, FIU, UCF, USF, SOUTH ALABAMA

The star of the recruiting class is Corbett although all reports point to him re-opening his recruitment. USF simply cannot afford to lose a player like Corbett although at this point, it's looking like it's going to be a fight. USF also doesn't have great backup options either. Elbert and Conley are formidable but nothing to write home about.

Another big get for the Bulls would be defensive tackle Ross Barron. A pairing of Corbertt and Barron would be a nice one-two combo. USF must also try to avoid losing hometown kid Whitaker to a rival such as UCF.

Linebacker
#24 OLB Jeffrey Reese | 6'2", 238lbs | Plant City, FL | 3-star | USF, MISS ST, FAU, FIU, UF [verbal commit]
#20 ILB Drew Graham | 6'0", 236lbs | Miami, FL | 4-star | UCF, USF, SOUTHERN MISS, GT, OLE MISS
#23 ILB Gary Prince | 6'3", 235lbs | Waggaman, LA | 3-star | ILLINOIS, LSU, USF, IDAHO
#55 ILB Alfred Jordan | 5'9", 228lbs Tupelo, MS | 3-star | USF, UNC, ILLINOIS, CINCINNATI, MISS STATE [verbal commit]

It starts with the in-state kids at linebacker with four-star inside linebacker Graham being a top target for the Bulls. Getting him along with keeping Reese and Jordan will give USF a trio at linebacker that can man their defense for years to come.

Defensive Back
#38 CB Antwan Shaw | 6'1", 174lbs | Miami, FL | 3-star | UCF, USF, FAU, FIU, SOUTHERN MISS
#26 S Tavarious Bailey | 6'2", 199lbs | Lehigh Acres, FL | 3-star | USF, FIU, UCF, FAU, TROY [verbal commit]

USF has plenty of depth in the secondary and youth. They'll be able to focus in on just Shaw and keeping Bailey at bay.

Re: Strength in Unity.

Looking forward to seeing what you can do in that fertile Florida recruiting ground! Really like your house rules, the majority of those are ones that I use myself to hopefully keep each season a struggle and not let things get too easy! Good luck, will be following.
