How to play online with friend?

Ok I’ve played the show for years and not really an online person, But my son moved out and we want to play each other. We keep sending challenges after we pick each other off the friend list. The problem is neither one of us is getting the challenge to except it. We are both online, so I’m not sure what we are doing wrong. Any help would be great? Thank you!

There was a server issue yesterday menus were slow and challenges failed.

What I suggest is go to online rated game both of u when its searching for opponents back out then challenge each other with the touch pad and go to play a friend.
