Outfield Assists

Something I’ve wondered all year with my franchise is the lack of outfield assists. I cannot throw a runner out due to them either not running, or them only running on a sure safe play. Any play that MIGHT be close, my infielder will magically be pulled off the bag to catch the throw from the outfield.

To back this up, I’m 7 games away from completing my first ever year of playing all 9 innings of every game of a season. My starting CF has 2 assists, my starting LF has 2 assists, and one of my RF has 1 assist. The other outfielder who plays all outfield positions as well as shortstop (Leury Garcia) has 23 assists, which I assume mostly come from the few times I’ve put him in the infield.

I’m sure this has been brought up before, but approaching the end of my season I finally have legitimate stats to prove this issue. I really hope it’s fixed next year.

** I’m playing with A&S’s exact HoF sliders, but in the beginning of the season used multiple other slider sets before settling in May of my season with A&S. **

The OF assists happen when you have guys with great arms, and accurate throws. I didn't play a franchise, but I played MtO, and DD. In MtO, I had double digits with Judge in right. And in DD I've had a few with Griffey (played about 25 games with him so far) maybe 4 with Gwynn (haven't had him for too long)... I know I've gotten a few with Yelich and with Bellinger too.

Arm strength and accuracy make it happen... Unless Ozzie Smith or someone with high (above 90) speed is tagging.

Re: Outfield Assists

Unfortunately, at least in my case, it's because 95% of the time they won't run unless the computer knows you're not going to get them. I can't tell you how many times I've accidentally stopped a throw and the CPU's baserunner keeps going even before I've even completed the throw motion.

I think this could be fixed if they relied on tendencies and if each player/base coach had a tendency to be aggressive... Certain players would take extra bases but also risk it more and certain third base coaches would send players more often at higher risk.

I hate when I see the guy rounding third on base hits to the outfield most of the time because I know that I'm more than likely not going to get him out.

This year I’ve also found the cpu baserunner not stretching singles into doubles..unless as you said they know ( somehow) they are not going to get thrown out in which they go in to second standing...not seeing any close plays at home at third ...different from last year...

Re: Outfield Assists

This is 100% an oversight for this year.

I agree an "Aggressiveness" rating for the baserunner, with speed and base running ability in the stew, would make for some more chance-taking on the bases.

There are balls that runners should be tagging up on, that refuse to tag up, if your outfielder plays the fly out from the "the runner is going to tag up" blue indicator.

The second you just catch the ball without using the move-forward animation spot, the runners will tag up, realizing (before the fact) that they will be safe.

Same goes playing at Fenway. On a ball hit to left field, if you field the ball cleanly, and make a perfect throw input, the base runner somehow knows this, and refuses to try to grab second base.

Similarly, you field it cleanly, but your throw input will bring you off the bag, the runner (again magically) knows the throw will be offline, and takes second base.

If the dice roll is leaning towards conservative base running, that's okay, but give us a slider to adjust runners who are notoriously more apt to try for an extra base.

I just threw out A Simmons at first (RF > 1B).

Re: Outfield Assists

The CPU definitely knows what's going to happen 99% of the time. Another way to confirm this is that the "press L1 to tag" button only comes up on plays that I'll be safe on. I've played about 70 games so far in this season of my franchise and I have been safe every single time it popped up and been out every single time it didn't. I won on a walkoff sac fly that was less than 20 feet directly behind 2nd Base because my hitter celebrated as soon as he made contact so I went for it and the throw was horrendously off target. There was a flyout to almost the same spot earlier in the game and there was no prompt to tag at all. The CF's arm ratings were both in the 70's too. There is far too much "premonition" going on vs CPU and it's almost game breaking at this point.

I thought that was impossible in the game. Didn't they change it so on a hit to OF the 1B does not cover first? Too many people complained a few years ago about this...
