NHL 20 - Impossible to hire coaches?

In Y1 of my Sens franchise and let all my out of contract coaches leave (C- or less) in order to replace with better. However, it seems just about every coach, irrespective of being Head, Associate, NHL or AHL, all want to coach Champions. In the end I resorted to randomly offering posts irrespective of overall or team fit, just to fill the posts. Anybody else experienced this?


Would be good to filter coaches by those interested. Also, wouldn't AHL coaches jump at a NHL job or at least a promotion in role? Seems like the logic is a little faulty...

Well, it's the Senators. I'm not sure many coaches would want to take that job right now, worst locker room issues in the league the past year or so.

I ran into a similar issue, but had more success by increasing the amount offered. They may patch this though.

Haha. That'll teach me for going for a challenge... I had a few knock-backs on the basis of market size, which I would think is Sens-specific but the amount of unattached coaches apparently only wanting to join champion-calibre? I would imagine it will be patched, eventually...

When your team is not very good you generally have to offer a bit more money to get someone to sign on. $50,000 above asking price usually does it. Also it helps of you interview coaches before hand. You can figure out there team and market preference. I did a test franchise with the Sens and I was able to find a ton of good coaches who said things like “I’m a small town kid at heart” and “I would really like to develop a rebuilding team” that were willing to sign for a fair price. You just have to do your due diligence and not offer coaches blindly

Thanks. I found asking coaches' thoughts on the org generally led to the same 'I want to join a champion' response. It happened so often that I was concerned it was a flaw.


Also, interviewing questions asking about salary seem redundant as they just confirm the numerical value in the original list?

Yes but if you follow that questions up with salary importance sometimes they will say something like “it’s not the most important thing to me”. At which point you may have the ability to sign them for a bit less. I don’t know for sure as I have not had enough time to test it as of yet
