Coming Back to the 2k Series Since 2k11

I haven't played NBA 2k with any regularity since NBA 2k11 (MJ cover). I'm a franchise-only type of player and am ready to dip my toe back into professional basketball. TO this day I still play College Hoops 2k8 and NCAA Football 14, but seeing some of the dynasties here for 2k19 has me wanting to get into this.

I'm asking for suggestions on what is the best way to enjoy franchise mode in this game since I've been out of it for quite a while. I'm very much a sim player, looking for realistic play styles and stats. I also like to play every game but know that's not possible with an 82-game season.

1) Are there specific rosters I should start with to get the most realistic start to my franchise?
2) To go with the rosters, what draft classes would mesh best with the rosters?
3) Specific slider sets to play a realistic game of basketball?
4) Franchise settings or ideas for me to be able to enjoy playing the entire season without actually playing all of the games?
5) Any other suggestions you think I need to know before getting started.

Thanks in advance fellas!

Here are some suggestions:

1. If you haven't played since 2K11, you'll probably be fine with the official roster and sliders at pro, allstar or superstar depending on your skill. That said, what roster set you use depends on what platform you are on. I'm on the PS4 and I really like PSN miiikemarsh custom roster that he has set up. Mainly because of the tendency edits he's made. I've been using it mainly to play a few other guys in some 7 game series. I also really like PSN timsfiction2019 roster quite a bit because it's all fictional players from day 1. The thing about the real life roster set at this point in the season is that it's after the trade deadline and everyone's team is where it stands now and not on day 1. You could sim the season and start in season two but I don't like to do that because of all the custom edits get progressed up or down. You can look through the roster section of this forum for more ideas or for xb1 rosters.

2. Same as number 1. You'll probably be fine with the auto generated rosters since you've been away from the game for awhile. I'm currently looking at using two fictional draft class creators for my file. The guys I've looked at mainly are bigdougswan and JB's fictional draft classes. There are some guys who have put together some draft classes based on the real life guys but I haven't decided on anyone in particular there. The thing about draft classes in my opinion is that the tendencies of the players are one of the most important edits in the classes as well as in the base roster. This is especially true if you are going many seasons in. I don't believe tendencies progress so I'm considering editing whoever's classes I use to tendencies that more match the base roster I am using. If you play two or three seasons, it's not that big of deal. But if you play a decade in, it could be something you might want to consider. Keep in mind that you can change your draft class during the season so you can get started and then load in the class you want as you go along.

3. On sliders, I'm also a fan of PSN miiikemarsh. I've used schnaidt's in the past. I liked them fairly well in NBA2K16. I'd consider using PSN barncore progression sliders.

4. As far as ideas for your myleague go, you can obviously pick your favorite team and go from there or pick an absolutely crappy team like the Suns and see what you can do with it. Right now, I opted to go with an entirely fictional myleague from the start and plan on completely changing everything over time. Since I've never seen any of the players, I look forward to facing each of them the first time and it keeps it interesting for me. One thing to keep in mind is there are three ways you can play MyGM/MyLeague. There's story mode which is the MyGm Saga continues. With it you have to use the default roster. You can do a traditional MyGm (with custom roster if you want) where you still have some sort of process to work with and keep track of your GM'ing skills. Or, you can go complete MyLeague where you can do whatever you want. I personally opted for just the MyLeague. As far as playing, maybe you could play all of your division games and playoffs and sim everything else.

5. I'd suggest looking at simworld's google doc for their work on plays that they feel work and plays that they feel don't work. I'd also take your time going through the MyLeague to keep tabs on what is happening with all of the other teams. Start a file to go through a little bit to get your feet wet and then start your real file.

Here's a video of how I set mine up. The rest of the series is ongoing on my channel if you want to follow along with how I am doing mine.

Thanks for all of the suggestions and I'll be sure to check out your video. As for starting the franchise, is there any way to use the current, updated rosters and do what Madden does and start from "today". So basically could I pick a team like the Hornets, start today where it's the playoffs, simulate the playoffs and start in the 2019 offseason?

Yes, you can do that with the official 2K roster.

Only with the official rosters? Or can I do this with custom rosters as well?

Only the official roster for start today I’m pretty sure.

I suppose you can work around that. After the offseason but before the new season starts you could upload each players DNA from a custom roster but you’d have to do it one at a time which is a hassle.

Not sure I have the patience to upload every player’s DNA. I actually don’t even know what player DNA is in this game haha. I guess I could just go with the official roster and hope ignorance is bliss to some of the “problems” people may have with franchise mode.
