Your house rules

I'm curious what are some of yalls house rules? I started a new legacy that I'm hoping will be the legacy that I will move forward with for a very long time (maybe even play out the whole 40 seasons). I had a couple legacies in that I've been playing but have felt like it was too easy to win too early.

So that being said I'm hoping that I can put the necessary house rules and such to make an enjoyable legacy and sufficiently difficult.

My rules:

-I can only have one player on the team 6'10 or taller

-I cannot recruit anyone 7'0 or taller

-I can only recruit a world recruit that had 50% or higher interest at the beginning of the year

-I can only have one world recruit on the team at a time

-I cannot sign any 3* or higher that happen to not have other teams offer scholarships. They are essentially world recruits.

-No JuCo players (I'm considering allowing on the team at a time but unsure at the moment)

-I create 10 4/5* centers every season to try and increase the number of post players.

-This one may seem kind of random. I changed all of the team profiles to where everyone plays exclusively man defense. I play on coach mode and have scored too easily against zones and matchup zones. Zones left too many open threes and matchup zones inevitably would leave someone wide open under the basket. I had a lot of really close games ruined by the other team switching to matchup zone and I would go up 20 points all of the sudden. Teams can still press though.

-I also changed all of the recruiting priorities to "none" in hopes of more balanced teams across the board. Too often I'd face a super talented team that was way better than mine but their tallest player was 6'7 and I'd have multiple 7 footers and dominate.

-Not sure if this is considered a house rule or not but I turned off players leaving early for the draft. Thought it would make things more interesting.

I've completely eliminated Pick & Roll from my playbook. It can be a guaranteed dunk/layup/free throws whenever in a pinch.

I'm using some self-imposed limits on recruiting. I have to use "Assisted", and I can only manually spend points on recruits that are added to my target list. I can only add recruits to the target list when their interest reaches a certain point.

The game doesn't display prestige ratings, so I just use a five year average for my school. CBBref for SRS from seasons before the game started. RPI in game. I thought about keeping a spreadsheet but that's way too much data entry. If I take a new job, I'll probably just use their RPI from before I took over 5 times.

Working well with my Western Illinois dynasty in the middle of season 2. Got one 3 star PF in the first class, and if I could land a SF with the same talent in this class, I'd be set. Except none meet the criteria for me, a lowly 1 star, to pursue. So I'm either going to have to grab one really late in the off-season or be faced with playing someone lacking the talent or size for the position there all next season. I wish I had cut my roster down instead of redshirting some lackluster talent. Maybe recruits would have had more interest. The fact that I am having to work to rise to the top of the Summit League, and that decisions I made may ultimately prolong the time I have to spend at my first job, has made it more immersive and challenging to me.

I do a lot of these too as well. World recruits are too easy to nab. Usually they aren't the best players in the recruiting pool, regardless if they are highly rated or not, but still too easy to add that talent to your roster. I think in my long-running St. John's/SMU dynasty I've only grabbed one world recruit and he ended up playing as my backup center for his entire career.

Recruiting players 7'0" or taller is also something that I avoid. Height is just overpowered in this game and you can easily take a 2* center and turn him into a first team all-conference player even with minimal skills. Since I playin in an open legacy, I went through and edited down all the 7-footers to be much smaller (between 6'9 and 6'11") for more realism. Some of the higher rated big men (4* and 5* centers) I would allow to be 7' or 7'1" for rare talents.

I don't create any players but a lot of time what I do is I'll go through the recruiting classes and see, for example, Duke signs three 5* point guards. So then I'll go into Duke's roster and edit at least two of those point guards to be different positions and skills to fit their roster a bit better. Hate seeing all the top teams with 10 guards, 4 forwards and 1 center.

Most of mine are recruiting related :

-Only 1 world recruit eligible on the roster, I can RS one if the one I have is graduating so two are possible but they are just too easy to recruit

- Only 2 juco recruits on the roster, same RS rule

- I can only have 1 offer out to a 4/5* recruit at a time, unless I meet goals

- I can only offer 4/5* players that are 1. Mun/Loc 2. have me in their top 5 until I meet certain goals.

Those goals are centered around the tourney. I can recruit an extra 4/5* from any location (except world or juco if im at my limit) if I make the Sweet 16 the prior year, I add another if I make the Elite Eight and again for the Final Four.

I also recruit to a specific system that I play. I won't recruit a PG under 6'2, my SG and SF need to have no worse than "b" shooting. I like a big SF to play at PF, typically I'm looking for a 6'6+ slasher type, kind of a mismatch guy. I never recruit an actual center, it's always a 6'8 to 6'10 PF. The centers just end up too big and too effective.

My 4/5* rule can trump the above, I'll take a smaller PG or different type of player if they fit my criteria, otherwise, I have to stick to 3* or less players to fill these specific roles. This is the toughest/most fun rule I have. It almost always ends up with me having a rebuilding type of season every now and then.

I never have all my scholarships filled, I only ever have 11 guys eligible at a time. Redshirting players and transfers don't count towards that total.

With players seemingly always getting suspended these days, I've made up a little game to incorporate that and add some realism. At the beginning of each week, I roll dice to see which players might get in "trouble". All 11 eligible players are assigned a number between 1-11 when they are recruited, for new guys, its the same number the player they replaced on the roster last season. My first roll is two dice, whatever players number comes up is the one in trouble, the number 8 is my free space, no one is in trouble .

I then roll just one die to find out what they are in trouble for, I have 6 categories: grades, small crime, team conduct, missing/late for practice, big crime, family. Grades and small crime are 1 game suspension for the first offense, additional game each other time for that specific player. Team conduct and miss/late practice can possible result in only being suspended 1 half if a 3rd dice role comes up even, odd equals 1 game. Big Crime gets a 3rd dice roll which determines how many games the player is suspended. Family is a one time thing with no further punishment and doesn't count towards their strikes. This rule has ruined great seasons for me but it's unpredictable and adds a lot of fun.

In the post season, these rolls only happen prior to the conference tourney and prior to the NCAA/NIT. No multiple rolls during the tourney.


My only rules during gameplay are that I cannot press unless I am down 10+ and I cannot make coaching adjustments until half time, 2nd half I can make unlimited changes.

I do coach mode and do not actually play the games.

My house rules are all recruiting based.

Recruiting Rankings Breakdwown
5 star 1-25
4 star 26-100
3 star 101-450
2 star ranked 451 - 800

Point system is + however many points, and then minus 800. That number (or combination of numbers) is the highest ranked recruit(s) you can get

Small Conference rule
unlimited base for 2 stars unranked

Mid-Major Conference rule
1 - 2star ranked
unlimited base for 2 stars unranked

Major Conference rule
1 - 3star
unlimited base for 2 stars

Power Conference rule
1 - 4star
unlimited base for 2 stars

BlueBloods are open ended and rules are voided

attached spreadsheet is the points allocation
The achivements marked with an X under Permanent stay and carry over to the next year.

If I recruit someone with the number 1 priority saying "Playing time doesn't matter", I must redshirt him in his freshman year. If I recruit someone with the number 1 priority of "Playing time", I cannot redshirt him in his freshman year (I don't necessarily have to play him, but a lot of times they are the ones that transfer out when unhappy).

I had the thought of trying to replicate the modern transfer rules by cutting my best player each offseason I'm with a non-power conference school. Using dice or random.org or something could make it more unpedictable. Some years nobody might leave; other years 2 or 3 might go. ( I HATE this in real life, but it is part of the game now especially for small schools.)
