HDR on or Off?

MLB 19

So I’ve noticed like a lot of HDR games, they looked washed out when turned on, but turn it off, it looks better. What do you think ?

I’m on a Sony 930e

I am on the exact same TV and am seeing the exact same thing. Without HDR as more color. With HDR has a bit of a washed out look. You would expect the opposite?

Same on lg tv. Had to turn this mode called dynamic color on for it to look ok, but still doesnt look how every other hdr game looks to me. It annoys me they dont give you hdr brightness sliders like every other hdr game does. Every tv handles hdr differently and obviously a higher end is gonna do it better than most but ive still be able to adjust this slider an geta way better picture in other games.

Re: HDR on or Off?

HDR for me looks phenomenal this year. I’m using a Sony x800d 43” so defintently nowhere near an elite TV but everything is spot on to me. I have my TV setup to rtings recommendations if that matters for anyone using the same tv.

I cant think of an HDR game that looks better with it on than off with this model TV at least.

I guess ill keep it off.

Also, I’m using balanced mode as ‘sharper’ 4K doesn’t look a whole lot better. Sacrifice a bit of sharpness for a smoother framerate.

Yes, you’d expect the opposite. But from my experience all HDR games on this tv have the same effect, weird.

Not sure if you tried Horizon Zero Dawn but if it was like that with that game, I’d suggest getting it calibrated because something doesn’t sound right.

Re: HDR on or Off?

HDR can be a mess due to an extreme oversight in the standardization of HDR ratings. Basically, in order to earn an HDR rating, you just need to demonstrate that the TV can hold a certain light differential between ANY two points on the screen for only 6 seconds.

TV manufacturers are taking full advantage of this oversight and selling HDR TVs with way to few lighting zones. HDR needs at least 100 lighting zones to be effective in its implementation, but many manufacturers are selling TVs with as few as 16 zones (4x4 grid), all while earning the highest rating an HDR tv can earn.

It's possible it's the Show itself that is the issue, the devs do have to input all the new numbers to enable HDR and that can be fudged up, but it's far more likely it's your TV. HDR has been completely ruined thanks to that standardization oversight.
