The upcoming release of the PS5 is why some of you should be patient with SDS

I see a lot of complaints on this board about graphics, animations, and the apparent lack of new and fresh features with The Show '19 just as there was with The Show '18. I've read threats from some about not buying the game again. In my opinion, there has never been a baseball game created on any console in any era as good as The Show. It isn't perfect, but it still looks and sounds light years better than anything else, and I've been around since the Atari 2600 days. The option to replace fictitious players with real minor league players has always added a whole new dimension to the game. Has anyone ever thought that SDS has peaked with what it can do with the PS4's capabilities? It's frustrating when something else breaks in the game when they address a problem, but maybe the PS4 is at its limit.

It's going to be exciting to see what the team can do with the technology of the PS5 when it's released. We're going to have a good 6 or 7 sequels of The Show thereafter with revolutionary improvements they simply can't do with the aging PS4.

I say never give up on the SDS team and The Show. Enjoy '19 and look forward to what the PS5 brings.

I disagree. I think the PS4 still has plenty of life and power to go. I could name other upcoming titles that prove this.

The problem is, no one saw the jump in graphics that we thought we were going to see going from the ps3 to the ps4. Player models being one of the main things, sure the faces have gotten better, but the players bodies still look like they are from the ps3 era. Sure, the stadiums were all redone, but they really don't look all that different from their ps3 counterparts. More or less the game has looked and played the same since the ps3, so saying wait to see what they can do with the ps5 is ridiculous. If they are not able to make big changes from the ps3 to the ps4, then you can bank on that you won't see a huge changes on the ps5 either.

Replace "PS5" with "PS4" and Show "19" with "Show "14" and this sounds like what I just heard 5 years ago.

Re: The upcoming release of the PS5 is why some of you should be patient with SDS

It's not console limitations that are holding this team back. It's the absolute need to produce a new product every single year. A one year development cycle in this day and age, with a team their size, is absolute insanity.

Player models upgrades could be limited by the time it takes to upgrade them, or by the engine itself, as it probably isn't aging to well. A one year cycle to switch to a new engine is impossible. Even if they did somehow miraculously manage to do it, they would have to strip a lot of features out of the game.

I definitely don't like every improvement that the SDS team makes, nor do I approve of their focus in improvements every year, but I am constantly floored with the amount of work these guys get done season to season.

TLDR; they can't make these large changes because they just don't have the time.

Seems like we're in an endless cycle with these yearly release sports games
  • New console comes out, the game won't be that good on a brand new console.
  • The console is only (1,2,3) years old, they won't max out the potential of the console till year 4 or 5.
  • It's year 4 or 5, the next console is coming out soon.

There's never gonna be an incentive for these companies to make THE sports video game experience, just the experience that can be slightly improved on the next year and so on and so on. Not that I'm saying anything that anyone doesn't know, but it is a very unfortunate side effect of this business model.

This is the biggest cop out imaginable. Why hold them accountable for any sort of high expectations on the PS5 when the PS6 will be out at some point? It's incumbent on them to do their best to produce a quality product in the present. Because these games are not being purchased with future dollars.
