Okay so I'm new to NBA live and the NBA in general and I started a franchise with the Hornets and noticed they're 18 million over the salary cap. So I try to make some trades but couldn't because of the cap space on the teams. So how does the salary cap work in the NBA? Can you resign players in the off season and go over the cap?

There is a hard cap and a soft cap in the NBA. Teams that are over the soft cap, pay a luxury tax to the NBA and also cannot resign any players that are not current on the team. If you are looking to sign a big contract player, you have to clear space under the soft cap to do so.

You can trade for these players as well but you have to match salaries perfectly if both teams are over the soft cap. You want to find a team with room under the soft cap and try to dump players on them with poor contracts. This happens all the time in the NBA.

Starting a franchise, it’s best to establish a core of players like we see in the NBA with big 3 and 2 players that are good assuming you want to win and not tank. Then build around them with your drafted players and signing useful pieces to short and inexpensive contracts so your cap isn’t log jammed for years. When you get under the soft cap and have space, you can trade for a big contract player or sign one in the off season to add to your core.

The players on your team, most likely can be re-signed with you going over the soft cap if they exceeded their bird years. At that point, you can resign your own players to go over the cap.
