Defensive Shifts...

I'm well into a month with my Franchise and other Team's shift strongly to the left side when Pederson or Grandal are batting. I've learned to swing later and drive groundballs down the 3rd baseline for doubles. In about a month both Pederson and Grandal have double digit numbers for 2B's. Will the AI eventually learn and not activate a shift??

My bigger problem with it is that in real life, there are players (Carpenter, for one) who can't do what you're doing, but in The Show I get tons of 2B with him down the 3B line.

I'd be curious to know whether what you are saying happens after a while, like whether the hit profile will actually start shifting back, or if guys like that have the capability to hit everywhere but still get shifted and never be played straight up.

Yes they will

I’ve had teams shift against carpenter in a game and then not the next game.

Ive also seen it change from at bat to at bat

Is that from them actually adjusting though?

I have some teams shift regular pull hitters, and other teams not.

Some guys won't get shifted on later due to the game situation, but I haven't seen any indications it's due to hitting the ball away from the shift.

I've had teams shift against Freddie Freeman, then play straight up after hitting the ball to the opposite field. So the logic is there

I think its from them adjusting.

I've seen the following happen:

In Game 1 of a series...a team shifts against Matt Carpenter. He beats the shift by going to the left side of the infield. In Game 2 of the series, they don't shift.

In his first AB of the day with no one on, a team shifts against Matt Carpenter. He beats the shift going to the left side of the infield. Another AB in the same game, with no one on, the defense doesn't shift.

Re: Defensive Shifts...

do teams IRL give up on the shift against a particular batter if he beats the shift 1 time? I read the Pirates book, BIG DATA something or another, and I seem to recall Clint Hurdles challenge was to get players to buy into the shift even it beat them the first few times.

I guess my point is that this doesn't prove that they shifted back again because you hit it the other way. Could be other factors.

I know I've hit balls the other way too and they would still come out with the same shift later.

On top of that, I don't remember a year where they promoted such a logic feature. And that is something that they would surely promote.
