Is pokecheck pretty much useless this year?

Any mode I play on pokecheck is an automatic penalty.

Seemed like they over powered it this year.

Or am I not using it right?

Any hints?

A lot of people will tell you that you have to be smart with using your poke check, but in reality it is downright broken this year, even after the patch. Even when standing in a great position to poke check, you'll likely take out the opponents skates. Also, the risk is not even remotely close to justifying the reward. When you actually do get a good poke in, the opponent can usually get the puck right back because it barely gets knocked away from him.

If you are playing offline, turn the tripping slider to like 25 or 30. Consistency of tripping calls is pretty good then, and makes the button actually usable. If you are playing in a mode where you can't change sliders, then you're just gonna have to get used to not using it and trying to play the body every single time.

Thanks for the tips. Online it's really bad w/ poke check. Now it's just a game where you try to body check check check the other opponent. I almost feel like the hockey part of the game is non-existent because as long as you get a body check in, you will most likely get the puck. Sometimes feels like a fighting game than a hockey game.

Sort of regret now purchasing this game.

the problem is, in previous years, poke checking was Overpowered big time online. This is where and why people start to get frustrated when getting tons of tripping penalties. people have to learn to adjust. I had this EXACTLY same problem when i first started with this game this year. i was so use to using poke check that i would get penalty after penalty after penalty.

Now, i will say DO NOT poke check when chasing the guy with the puck(as this will almost 100% of the time become a tripping penalty) where as previous years it would not. IF you are using 1.01 tuner, Stick Lifting is really the way to go now. 1.02 changed that where stick lifting now will pretty much give a slashing penalty just as much as poke checking gave tripping penalties at the release of the game.

you're pretty much describing me how i played previous years.

I don't mind they under powered the poke check this year, i was looking forward to the challange and learning a new way to play. But even if I poke check in front of the skater, i still will draw a penalty. So I dont even use it now, not an option. Just trying to body check everyone which is getting boring.

Yeah I’ve learned to adjust my play. I don’t poke check unless the players facing my player. Never from behind unless it’s a break away and I feel it’s needed then pokey pokey. I’ve been doing well staying out of the penalty box now. In the past I would poke away, but learned how to play around and play smart since my teammates plays better defense now so I can also rely on them.

Re: Is pokecheck pretty much useless this year?

I'm only playing be a pro as a center (so I can't switch players), but I'm finding that I just never use the buttons anymore on D. You can get away with a poke check if you are skating backwards and are clearly stick to stick with a guy, but otherwise, use the body. This year's game finally rewards good positioning and putting a shoulder to someone (you can knock players off the puck without crushing them with a monster hit).

I've been blocking shots and passes just being in the right spot. I just play the body now and ignore the puck (this is realistic, but of course not what we've learned in past NHL games).

Granted, I'm only playing be a pro and in juniors right now so your mileage may vary. I'm having a blast playing a 2 way center this year.

Stick lift and play the body. I kind of like that poke check has been taken away completely. The game kind of needed that quite frankly.
