Sorry guys prob a dumb question to ask but it's been forever since I've played Madden. Anyway my question is do you need PS Plus to play online? I simply just want to play against a friend of mine occasionally.

You're going to need a subscription to play online just like most other games sadly. You do have the ability to download custom rosters though.
