Contract Extension Glitch? Help please

I'm in year 4 or 5 of my franchise with the 76ers. Joel Embiid and Jackson Baldwin (my #1 draft pick after year 2018) want to sign an extension in the middle of the season. I don't have the money to sign them right now and they keep getting mad that I have to break my promise every week. I want them to sign the extension in the offseason, when I will be able to free up a lot more money with McCollum and Hernangomez becoming free agents.
Is there any way to avoid them getting mad? Or is this a glitch that I can't avoid? Please advise. I don't want to trade anyone else away in the middle of a title run. But if I lose Embiid or Baldwin, I would definitely delete the game forever. It just doesn't seem realistic.

Are you offering contracts with bird years? Never promise anything in mygm. Wait until the season is over then ditch some bad contracts right after signing your staff.

I think I was offering bird years. I think that was the default.
Are you suggesting that I Deny the Promise to extend with Coddle/Tough love?
