Postured up from half guard or top mount...

What's going on with this? I get that top mount is a dangerous position and that you shouldn't let your opponent get there but in each of these positions I feel like my opponent can rain hell down with a never ending gas tank whereas my fighters seem to be unable to block or arm trap at all.

Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong or is this just ****ed?

Re: Postured up from half guard or top mount...

I am not doing well in mount. In half guard I can block and transition as long as I dont get frozen up from shots. In mount I can block 10 strikes and still not be able to transition out without getting punched and reset.

I am struggling in general with the ground against good players. I am good at the basics like denying/reversing, swooping on transitions etc... But against guys who can deny everything and rarely transition I am at a loss. I feel like I can get layed on all day and at best get stuck in a loop of half guard-side control-side saddle. Anyone have any advanced grappling advice or strategy for how to play against the really good grapplers?

Lay and Prey is like a chess battle somewhat.. if it was played by a couple of speedfreaks.

You've got a few options from my experience.

1. Stuff em'!! Literally, don't let them get you down, this can be harder said than done. But mixing uppercuts into and onto the end of your combos can help against those American Gangster types.

Uppers to a shooting opponent are VERY powerful. I've got a few early flash KOs just off catching the other guy while he shot in.

2. If they do manage to get you into Wrassle County, then you want try and keep yourself in full guard as much as possible, play it VERY slowly, if they start baby punching for GA, punch them back ONLY with the hand not controlling the head. You can somewhat effectively neutralize eachothers GA this way.

3. You can also try fakes, if they don't bite then you are somewhat forced to wait until they try and transition themselves, deny it, use that sweet, sweet GA to GTFU.

Obviously arm traps are fantastically useful if you can time them, too.

Misc:
if you get top control early and have someone with an Arm triangle from half guard. This makes a great "feeler" sub, in that you can test the opponents defense without losing top control if they escape.

Lay and Pray is effective as hell when your good at it (I am good at it, but I find it a bit too boring to use outside emergencies) and has few risks provided you have good submission defence, aren't too overconfident, but that's why its successful IRL too.

Edit: there are probably far better Anti-Wrasslin' tactics out there. These are just some of mine.

-Stop trying to spam fakes

-Maintain stamina

-Block a few strikes and transition to half guard as soon as they strike into your block

Mount really sucks right now for the dominant fighter. No one should really be having issues escaping.

Thanks for breaking it down, these tips will help a lot. My standup is getting good so I am finding myself getting taken down a lot more. I can handle the average grappler fine but I need to get to that next level to compete with the grappling focused players. My TD defense needs work, i always forget to watch for it.

I'll keep this in mind but there have been occassions that they've postured up and it's not even let me attempt to block, fake or transition. It's as if the game doesn't even register me attempting to transition etc. The other guy just seems to hit to the body, head, body, head etc in quick time.

I think that happens if you miss time an arm trap, theres a delay on when you can transition again. You should always be able to block though so I’m not sure.

Re: Postured up from half guard or top mount...

I don't ever go to top mount anymore. It is like once you there it is an instant stamina dump before you even throw a punch. Being on the bottom of top mount, yes there are many times where the game don't register your block. I lost against the CPU last night because of this. CPU mounted me and fired off 5 punches in rapid fire mode and knocked me out because the block wasn't registering. Also noticed when the CPU is top mount, their stamina bar stay full too.
