Board Play

One thing that frustrates me, is the board play, If you go to the boards (especially in your own end) and battle for the puck, 9 out of 10 times the opposition will get possession of the puck with the ability to carry or pass the puck.

Does anyone else feel this way?

Re: Board Play

Board play will be the hardest thing to emulate in this franchise. It's such an unpredictable thing in hockey. I do agree that the super ai players do get the benefit of being able to dig the puck out better

My biggest issue with the board play is that my AI teammates don't ever seem to go to the right side. If the defender is pinning me from the left, that's where they sit...not the wide open right side.

Either way, I've been annoyed with boardplay since they reintroduced it. It's only ever 1 on 1, without the pile up and chaos that happens in the real game, and it just ends up being a frustrating thing, as the AI frequently suck you up against the boards without trouble, and as mentioned before, your AI teammates fail to help you out while you're there.

Re: Board Play

I find if you power up the pass button you can send it hard around the boards and maybe find a winger to pick it up, because you're right, your AI teammate will usually go to the wrong side.

Yeah, no one can realistically kick a puck that hard, but they gave you no outs once again with coding that got put on the to-do list in favor of mascots and 3s.

Re: Board Play

I play as position lock LD and therefore I try to initiate board play and net front battles whenever possible. Having said that, I was initially disappointed in NHL18 board play because there was very little using out-of-the-box sliders. Then, as usual, I started testing posted sliders. I have settled on using "OBG's NHL 18 Supersim Sliders (low passing percentages guaranteed)" and while I would like a bit more board play, it feels about the same amount as NHL 17.

I took stats for board play of 1 game (STL "cpu" vs CHI "me" in NHL18).

There were 16 instances of board play, 4 in the O-zone and 12 in my D-zone. Of the 4 in the O-zone, 3 were started by the STL and 1 by me. I won 2 out of 4 battles because I had 2 of my players in one of them and 3 in another. My LD was always in the battle and I joined in. The 2 lost battles were 1 on 1 with my LD.

In the D-zone, I won 5 of 12 battles. Three holding calls were made, 2 against and 1 for as a result of board play. Of the remaining 4 that I won, I had 2 or more players in on the play, 3 times, and I won the 4th battle 1 on 1.

Your results my vary of course.

Re: Board Play

Boardplay is much better with the attribute effect at 10. You can chip the puck in and pin the defenders now. The speed difference is basically null and void. CPU can no longer spin out of the way quickly. This has had made battles for the puck so much better and more fair so to speak.

Has anyone figured out how to gain possession of the puck along the boards? I too lose 9 out of 10 times.

Re: Board Play

I get frustrated when I try to kick it out to my player. I could have one of my guys on each side and it will somehow go to the opposing player directly behind me. I'm going to try the 'power up the pass' suggestion that the other guy posted. Sorry, I can't remember the name at the moment.
