Basketball IQ Within Community?

Hey all, I just wanted to start a discussion on basketball iq because I play 2K EVERYDAY, hours and hours. And I come across very few people who have any type of basketball iq. People love to resort to "its just a game", but if that's the case, why are people so pressed with it being so realistic in the areas of player modeling, signature playstyle/likeness?

I know for a few of us, 2K is our way to be involved with the NBA world and have the direct impact of the way things go virtually. So to me its weird that people still don't adopt the skill needed to ultimately successful. I mean to me, it's just much more enjoyable playing "the right way". Being "2K" good or having stick skills does matter, but if you only have those and no BBall IQ. You're equivalent to having talent, without the intangibles and skill. Or maybe it's vice versa, having the skill but not the natural talent. ANd as we see with the greatest, most of them had the natural ability and worked hard to gain the skills in order to maximize their dominance....

I just wish there was a way to make it less enjoyable without the required skill, doesn't sound fair. But it's really annoying playing online (Teamup, ProAm, Park) and no one knows any style of play but leaking out for easy scores, or setting screens at the top of the key. It's like none knows what spacing is, or that you don't set on ball screens in the corner. Most don't understand how to play defense, it's not that hard. I'm not making myself out to be perfect. But I always play a smart game.... What do you guys think about the people you play against and alongside?

Because if we're spending money on a product that is advertised to provide us with certain likenesses, we expect them to be as accurate as possible. Has nothing to do with one's basketball iq, or lack thereof. Yes, this is a video game and there needs to be a balance between fun for entertainment value and gameplay strategy for enthusiasts. That's why there are options in the game that tend to cater to both, albeit maybe not so much on the online portion of the game, which I really don't play for some of the same reasons as you've stated in your opening post. I prefer to play solo and run plays and play the game of basketball as it is intended to be played with the options presented to me within the core of the play books, etc. Do I have some basketball iq? Yes, I played basketball in an organized setting for quite a few years through school and community leagues. Do I think it should be required or people should somehow be punished by some detrimental gameplay settings because they lack such iq? Ultimately, I get what you're saying though especially as it pertains to online play, I guess that's the idea behind the teammate grade? Not sure how effective it is but whatever, it's just a game .

When people say that wide open threes should go in 90%-100% of the time for sharpshooters, you know that basketball IQ is non existent within the community

Being a lifelong coach, I get what you mean. Especially the "just a game" argument. But to me it's the platonic story of the man in the cave all over

I wish i had a group of irl ballers to play with. I don't see a team like that would lose many games. Clock management alone is enough in most games already

A few sets and some higher level zone d could do a lot of damage

Re: Basketball IQ Within Community?

As a 2k supporter, I am getting less and less patience with accuracy of players past/present when it comes to those with the job of achieving their likeness. Not in player models, but like, having the right accessories, and good Jesus their tendencies.

When playing online in a pick up, when was the last time you were in the corner (offball) and someone set a screen for you? Like that rarely happens and that's the IQ of most players.

If I'm an SG, and I "get" to dribble the ball up court, the user PG will run around me calling for the ball instead of just getting up court and into the flow of the offense. THEN, I get to the 3pt line and the PG AND THE SF to set a pick each for me at the same time.

Clockwork.

Then... you go to the offline world (where I live most of the time) and someone says "I don't like your sliders/rosters because Kawhi should be the beast he is defensively" (meanwhile, looking at the box stats he posted, he set a new career high in points for Kawhi) lol.

So like other posters mentioned, by a simple comment or two that was made (or actions in the game) you can tell what BBall IQ you're dealing with.

I send a PM to the user online if they're being terrible and give them some insight. Try to further the cause.

I kinda have this and which is why I feel spoiled at times and hate playing park and pro-am with randoms. We don't call plays each possession but we essentially do a freestyle offense based off horns.

On defense we zone if needed but for the most part we're very good and comfortable with rotating and calling out switches and stuff.

Re: Basketball IQ Within Community?

NBA 2K is a very popular game and the #1 top selling basketball video game

Not only do coaches(Coach Nick at BBallBreakdown) play this game but 12 year old kids who like basketball do as well.

Every time I go online I understand this and just try to have fun when playing with and against random people. Sometimes I get mad when people miss an obvious cut or walk into my space on the court but I remember at the end of the day this is the game everybody is playing.

I don't care if my opponent is cheesing the game(that's on 2K if they want to be seen as a basketball simulation). If the game has proper tools to counter it and those tools are rooted in basketball fundamentals then I will do so and I will win.

For every 2-3 Zone Defense look there is a 2-3 Freelance Action to counter.

That's true, but on the other hand, I was just thinking today... I've played enough bball video games and watched enough bball that the two are tied together. So I can be watching some preseason nba bball and start thinking about 2k.

There are way too many people on 2k who DON'T PASS. Like literally do not ever pass, or if they do pass, it's just because they've tried and tried to do something and the clock is running down.

The ball moves so much faster than a player, esp in a game like 2k where most passes are lasers. You have to have some mental disability if you are against passing. You should pass to *everyone* even the cpu if you unfortunately have one, because it's so dumb to play without everyone getting touches. People who, if you hit the cpu for a lay up, are like calling for a pass and make him throw a jump pass out of bounds. It's not even a bball IQ issue, it's just a level of stupidity and immaturity.

I can kind of understand why people rage out and stop passing (still don't like it), but people who, from the tip, never look to pass are way too common online.

I remember playing with this trash dude, who was on the mic, and he was talking about how my friend and I sucked (we were carrying him to multiple wins) and he drove it and tried a half fade away and got blocked by two people at once. That was probably the most pathetic fail I've ever seen in 2k, and that still doesn't compare to how cancerous it is to not even think about passing the ball.
