The Poor Man's EA UFC 3

Besides EA UFC 2, obviously, there is agame that you can play and perhaps partially quench your thirst for a new and sophisticated fight game: Absolver.

It just came out. ZombieRommel is also playing it and he also thinks that his experience with the EA UFC game him an edge. And I think I saw Acebaldwin playing it, too.

Absolver doesn't really aim for realism. Its vibe is more towards fight movies. Having said that, the fights look very cinematic and entertaining, not only if you're playing them, but also if you're watching them and know what's going on. That is the case despite the simple graphics and animations, because of the composition of the fight. You gotta work for every hit. There are no ugly *** juggles an dyou don't see characters ducking to block a leg kick with their forearms, as it's common in arcade fight games.

The game is also only half the price of a AAA game. It doesn't focus on grind at all. You can make friends, create your own school of martial arts, where you fully customize all your moves and combos, join the schools of other players, etc. And so far, a few days in after launch, the combat is seeming extremely balanced, which is quite a miracle, considering how open the system is (you can edit every move). Here is a video of one of my recent fights, in case you're interested:

Looks pretty cool. You playing this with controller eh? I might pick it up at a later point. So what's the endgoal here, what you listed sounds pretty cool but is there any late content?

I think once upon a time people even suggested blocking to work the way this game approached it, for EA UFC 2 that is.

The endgame is really the PvP, creating or joining a school, and mentoring or being mentored. The dedicated PvP option, called Combat Trials, only has 1v1 fights right now, but 3v3 will be added later.

There are rare moves you can only earn by defending against opponents using it, which is one of the coolest ideas I've seen in a game in recent years. Lots of gear to acquire that both boosts certain stats and changes your character's look.

I'm loving the game. All it's missing is grappling, but the hand-to-hand is super satisfying. Great animations and nice meaty *thwacks* for every blow.

I'm not confident enough this would appeal to UFC players to recommend they drop $30 on it, but it certainly scratches my itch for technical 3D fighting while I wait impatiently for UFC 3.

Gameplay-wise, Absolver really feels like a mix Dark Souls and For Honor to me. The game doesn't go out of its way to explain all the nuances, and the simple single-player quest you start out with might be an annoyance to someone looking to jump straight into competitive fights. It takes its combat seriously, but it's by no means a straight-up combat sports title.

^ This, very much!

The end game is the PvP. You can set up your character qualitatively in less than 10 hours, exploring the world and such. But the meat is really PvP ad it will hardly get old because of how incredibly open it is.

Bought it today. Quite fun, dodging with right analog is challenging though.
