3 Things EA Sports UFC 3 Could Learn From Fight Night Champion! (MartialMind video)

Another MartialMind video, but since we lack discussions on here anyway, I'd figure I would just make a new thread for this one. The other thread resulted into some good discussions and I would too like to take a look back at Fight Night.

I've been quite honest about how underwhelmed I've always been with the striking in the previous EA UFC games considering the years of experience the team had with striking games, but then never touching some of the aspects that made those games so good and fun to play.

Since the video encourages voicing our opinions on those matters I'd figure I might aswell drop it on here and see if we can find a single person that did not like that stuff, because I have yet to find one.

As someone who never played the fight night champion, why is it remembered so fondly. What was so good about it that ufc games haven't replicated?

Is it worth picking up?

Listen, Martial knows what he's talking about, but I really dont want the game to be like Fight Night. Striking looks so weak... of course it looks beautiful and very realistic for a 6 years old game, but the striking looks weak for the most part. Some of his points make sense tho.

For me, it is mainly the fact that everything made sense. Especially behind the scenes. It just felt that everything made sense. Stamina, damage, and it was just incredibly fun to play.

When we look at the striking in the EA UFC games, to me, it just feels like they knew what they needed, and put everything in a bag, and you'll just have to see who comes out on top. It doesn't feel like the things are happening have much thought behind it.

And again, they completely ignored some of the mechanics that made their boxing games so great. Even thought there was place for them in MMA games too. The addition of head movement in EA UFC 2 was nice, but again, it felt like it lacked depth and reason. I know some people were good with that stuff but eh, yeah.

If you still have a 360 around then I'd say give it a shot. I'm sure you will have fun with it.

Fair enough, but as you said, its a 6 year old game. And it is boxing, so strikes are bound to look less devastating. Just by adapting to what made these boxing games so great, doesn't mean that the strikes are going to get any weaker because of it. It's still an MMA game and should be approached as such.

I 100% agreed. the slider, likeness of fight style, the stamina system. All was greaaaaaaat in FNC.

I always missed that head movement and moving with jab of FNC. It was fantastic. the striking feels great and responsive unlike ea ufc2.

My biggest fear is they will make it just like FNC and tune it constantly. That's what drove me away from FNC.

Edit: I loved FNC, but I couldn't get a feel because it kept changing.

Why was Fight Night Champion great? Look at how DEEP the gameplay is. Look at how deep the game is, just in general. Even the little things, like going to your corner at the end of a round is a hundred times more deep than it is in UFC 2. The fighter uniqueness is exactly what we want from UFC games today, but don't get. You can forgive certain gameplay flaws or whatever if a game is supremely deep. I think that's a big issue I have with the UFC series. Because not only has the gameplay been horrid, there's nothing at all deep about the game besides it. Everything is so barebones.

Like he says in that video, Fight Night was great for the crowd that doesn't care to play online. I am part of that crowd, as I loathe online play for any sports title. I'm an offline franchise mode/CAF/CAP kind of player. So when your AI is terrible, and your modes are thin, and your CAF is thin, I get bored with a game pretty quickly.

UFC 2 does have one redeeming feature, the grappling is actually quite expansive. I've played this game so much yet I still find out new things in the clinch and on the mat from time to time.
