Christian Bethancourt

Curious if SCEA can anwser how Christian will be handled in 17?

He's Padres backup catcher and relief pitcher... I believe outfielder as well.

Re: Christian Bethancourt

Maybe the same way they handled Sean Doolittle. I dont know off-hand how Doolittle was in 16 but they used to have his secondary as 1B IIRC

Re: Christian Bethancourt

I've been trying to figure this out as well. If they don't include the secondary positions (like they did for Doolittle), we can't edit a pitcher's secondary position. Another potential issue is the fact that in '16 you can't start a pitcher somewhere in the field. So you couldn't start Bethancourt at C, OF, or DH. Jordan Schafer is also doing this with the Cardinals. He has played CF and already pitched a scoreless inning so far in Spring Training.

It would also be possible to put Adam Loewen in that group, too, no?

Bethancourt is a weapon being a catcher: his roster spot is almost guaranteed since he's not bad defensively. SD would be the only NL team with a 13 man staff then including him, no?

A team like the Cubs could potentially have a 13-man staff. And when Venditte is in the majors, do you count that as an extra man? haha

I heard Miami may be going with a 13 man staff. It's a pretty common thing but it's unsustainable.

Re: Christian Bethancourt

Miami at this point says they're gonna give a 13 man pitching staff a try. They have an astounding 12 pitchers with guaranteed major league contracts and then there's Jose Urena who is out of options and they don't want to lose him so the plan to start the season is a 13 man staff. I don't think it last for long especially being an NL team but they've said it enough times that I'm starting believe they'll try it and it's not just generic spring training talk.

Re: Christian Bethancourt

Brewers minor leaguer Nick Ramirez is also attempting to become a reliever and it appears the Brew Crew would like him to be a two way player...so I would love to see the option to have first base and other back-up positions as a possibility for CAPs.
