How do I drive?

I'm posting this here since it's not getting any responses in the sticky:

Hey I'm pretty new to the NBA series and the NBA in general (just started watching regularly last year and I just started playing when 2k16 was given as a free game to PS+ members (which was amazing)) and I'm slowly learning how to get guus open for shots and whatnot. The PnR being my most used method. But strictly playing PnR gets boring fast and is only one aspect of scoring in basketball.

This leads me to my question. I really want to learn how to drive the lane and get to the basket for a layup or dunk. My problem is that when playing against the AI, it seems like two things are happening:

a. My defender is glued to me and I can't get around him. Ibe been working on this somewhat using Sam Pham's crossovers to try and catch my defender off guard but it hasn't been working that well. I also don't think every drive should be the result of a crossover and a broken ankle.

B. Other defenders other than my guy are clogging the lane and it seems like said lane is non existant. So I've been forced to pass the ball around endlessly (which I know is a good thing but every basketball player needs to know how to drive.)

Any detailed help would be greatly appreciated. I'm currently playing on All-star as I try to get better at the game.

Re: How do I drive?

it's impossible to drive from a triple threat stance with someone like kobe or jordan - first steps mean nothing in this game. your best bet driving is chaining together dribble moves from a stand-still and trying to capitalize on your defender's reaction. even then it's clunky and delayed and will result in you picking up your dribble half the time. either that or you'll veer of in a crazy angle and lose the ball off of your teammate's ankle. the online anti-cheese is killing the offline sim experience.

call for a pick, left bumper.
that helps you to get a step on your man

Otherwise, I like to use spins. drive right at an angle and spin clockwise to the left.

Or get into the post position and then drive out of it.
You should have your defender behind you, but it depends on your post control to some extent

I actually disagree. I attack from the triple threat with Melo all the time with good results. If you can read your defender, how he's playing you, and mix up your moves it will work. If you get into the triple threat and jab once then drive right every single time, you won't go anywhere.

The problem is, it was much better executed when Game launched in mid Sept. After few tuning patches fixing online cheese mostly, offline got broken beyond belief.

You can't burst past center, other point guard now. They got massive speed boost in lateral quickness so players like Horford are as fast as Irving going back to basket. Only works for AI teams. User teams get opposite ;]. And bump on opponent and your player stops. DEAD. Not something I see on NBA courts, 2k.

eh, it drives me pretty nuts. the cpu defender's recovery speed is overpowered and i just end up running into him picking up my dribble. maybe i'm just bad.

Lol i encountered the same. i manage to counter with a spin (rotate right stick) when the cpu defender cuts the lane. to my surprise i was able to free up the defender and i soared for dunk. Felt good on that play.

that was all-star level so i'm not sure if can replicate the same when i go SS

Re: How do I drive?

I've tried going 1 on 1 iso against defenders from AS to HOF and it's impossible to get a 'first step' on them for the blow-by. It feels like CPU defenders have a lateral quickness boost or something (even tho the sliders don't show that).

I've had mismatches where the CPU switches like Porzingis on Westbrook and Westbrook still can't burn him on a blow-by on SS and HOF. On AS, it's actually possible, but the frequent bumping is still annoying.

You need to dribble moves to get by them for the dunk/layup/stop&pop. If you don't dribble and turn the corner as fast as possible around them, then you end up bumping into them and getting the bump animation where you pretty much pick up your dribble.

This year's 2K has issues with spacing the floor and bump animations. You pretty much can't weave through defenders like Curry or CP3 in the mid range area (between the paint and 3pt line) because there's no space and there's consistent bumping.
Also really ruins fast breaks because you're barrelling down the court with Lebron, then CPU defenders somehow catch up when they're either not as fast (bigs) or strong (guards), and Lebron can't finish a strong layup in transition without going into a silly fall-away layup animation.

Any way 2K can tweak the bumping? Like this is the thing that's creating clunkiness for me in the gameplay.
