The NHL17 Goalie Tips Thread

This thread will be updated as more tips are added for you guys. All videos are welcome so long as the creator is ok with it.

Hello everyone. I'm back to help the NHL community out with NHL 17 goalie tips. To go along with the goalie tips, I put a lot of hours in to raise the level of the video production (especially the 2nd vid ) so hopefully you guys enjoy and any feedback or questions is more than welcome.

BASIC MOVEMENT CONTROLS

Left Stick Full Push- Control most used in a game, used to track the puck. Keeps you controlled and helps prevent excess movement in the crease.

Left Stick Full Push- Covers long distances in the crease. One Timers, Crosses, cross ice passes in general

Butterfly Push (LS then Butterfly)- Covers more distance then left stick, but risks oversliding.

Right Stick- Quick move that covers most distance in the crease. BIG risk of oversliding. Main purposes are for last second rebound saves. Can also be used to change posts when the puck is behind the net.

Butterfly Shuffle (Butterfly + Precision OFF + Quick, Full, Tap of RS) - Not used very often but helpful for making small adjustments to your butterfly positioning.

ONE TIMERS AND CROSS CREASES

PLAY THE SHOT, PREPARE FOR THE PASS

Don't cheat- Our first job is to cover the shot, ALWAYS.

Positioning - Find an area in the crease where your comfortable moving around. For 17, I've found that the hashmarks are the farthest I'll usually go. This is a tiny step further out than 16 but things can change after patches.

Give up Depth (Move Back) - Helps cut down distance needed to move for one timers. Too deep and you'll risk getting sniped.

Locate opposing skaters - Top Goalies know where everyone is on the ice at all times. This will make reading plays very easy.

Most saves should be with ONLY the left stick.- Movement is quick enough to make most saves, plus this will keep you in control of your goalie.

Butterfly Push (LS first, then quickly press butterfly) - You'll cover a lot more distance but run the risk of sliding out of position. Best used for passes that will end up really close to the net to block the low part of the net.

Right Stick/Desperation Dives - For one timers, this is for emergencies only, use as a last resort.

How to Save Breakaways

Positioning - Don't play too deep in the crease of you'll get sniped!

Early Read - If possible you can get a hint from the skater by reading their skating angle. This 'tell' by skaters can help give you the extra edge when playing a breakaway.

What move to use? - Butterfly push or post lean is a good choice against fast skaters as the stand-up is too slow and can have trouble keeping up. If the skater takes his time such as on a penalty shot then stay stand-up as long as possible to track the skater and avoid over-committing.

PATIENCE IS KEY! - Let the skaters make the first move. Don't guess.

Remember skater tendencies - Everybody has a 'go to move'. If you remember XxGretzkyxX loves the backhand, that's another advantage you'll have against skaters.

Flying Pokecheck - Desperation moves in general are good to mix things up and keep skaters guessing. I look for situations where the skater has a lot of speed and will have trouble changing direction to avoid my pokecheck.

Spread Eagle - Covers the low part of the let, a bit risky as they need to basically skate into or shoot right at you. I prefer the pokecheck but other goalies prefer the spread eagle. Use at your own risk lol.

Vs CPU Skater - Be crazy aggressive and fly out of the crease. CPU players will rarely deke and try to snipe. Make yourself as big in the crease as possible for the easy save.

How to Save Deflections

Everybody hates deflections so this should help ^_^

Stay Centered to the Shooter- The obvious reason is for proper positioning to save the initial shot but this will also give you an equal chance if the puck gets deflected to our left or right.

Challenge the Shooter - This will help cut down the angle and distance the puck can change direction when deflected increasing the odds of the puck finding your body instead of the back of the net. THE DEEPER YOU PLAY IN THE CREASE, THE ODDS OF A DEFLECTION GETTING PAST YOU INCREASE!!

Butterfly to Protect 5-Hole - Most deflection goals beat us 5-hole. Manually drop to butterfly when you read a shot since auto-animations aren't always reliable. Since you already moved up in the crease to challenge the shot, it'll be harder to get beat up high so we need to focus on the low shot.

Post Play, Wraparounds, and Reading Corner Plays

Keep the Controls Simple - Its easier to use the post controls without the toggle feature EA added in NHL16. Hold the post button when you want to hold the post and release the post button to release the post. This makes using the RVH very simple to use.

RVH or the VH??- The RVH is the post move you will be using almost every single time. Try to avoid the VH whenever possible at it puts you at a disadvantage when playing net for multiple reasons stated (and shown) in the video.

Stand-up Post Hug- Rarely used but can be useful in specific scenarios. I rarely use this move as I prefer to be off the post when this situation arises (most of the time) but this is based on personal preference.

When you're on the post turn OFF Precision Movement - For alternate controls this means holding down LB/L1, for default controls it's LT/L2. This will allow you to perform a VERY IMPORTANT post move called the Butterfly Shuffly. Shown in the video it will allow you to take a small nudge off the post making it easier to save centering passes AND if you need to get back on the post (lets say the attack shortside), you can do so very quickly.

When to hold the post?- It is 100% situational. Just because the puck goes into the corner does NOT mean you have to hold the post. Remember they can't score from the corner! If there's an open skater in front of the net for a centering pass, stay off the post and be ready for the pass. If the puck carrier from the corner crashes the net and attacks shortside get back on the post.

Multiple examples are shown in the video if needed.

This video is a quick tip showing an example of the 'Frozen Goalie Glitch' and how to escape it should it happen to you.

NEW Goalie Tips for Adjusting to the Tuner

These are tips for the new goalie tuner which is giving goalies trouble. There's so much information here that I created a separate thread for it as well with a full article to go along with the video.

When should we drop to Butterfly?

good stuff jmoney... I always enjoy these type of tutorials... EA should put them in the game for people to see before they play goalie in OTP... can make things easier for a lot of people wanting to play the position

goalie is one of the positions I will play a lot at times so I love these videos..., although I'm trying to focus on center first but my second most preferred position will be goalie

Re: The NHL17 Goalie Tips Thread

Hello. I just stumbled upon this thread so I just signed up. I am having a poor season in 17 so far as a goalie. I'm around 4.75 and .720 so far after 16 games played (club and drop in.) I was much better in 16 and the 17 beta. I'm looking forward to watching the videos and following this thread.
