2016 Rio Olympics

With the opening ceremonies set to take place one week from today, and first events actually taking place on Wednesday with Womens soccer(notables include Brazil-China,Canada-Australia,US-New Zealand).

Mens soccer takes place on Thursday August 4th, 1 day before opening ceremonies(notables include Brazil-South Africa,Mexico-Germany,Portugal-Argentina).

So go ahead and discuss all topics Olympic related here(except possibly basketball,if anyone here wants to have an Olympic thread in the basketball section to talk about all countries, feel free to make it).

Re: 2016 Rio Olympics

This is going to be a **** show.

It'd be really cool to compete for your country, but sometimes (this being one of them) it just isn't worth it.

Au contraire mon frere.
"We do these things not because they are easy, but because they are hard."

Mad respect to those who choose to risk representing this year.
I think those that compete this year will be remembered a little more specially.
Just an opinion.

It's not necessarily the Olympics that's the issue it's the clown show from Brazil. They were so ill equipped to take on an event of this magnitude and thus this debacle has pushed the IOC to go with smaller more economical Games from here on out.

So in that respect, this may be a blessing in disguise.

Gotta feel bad for the athletes having to compete in substandard venues with HORRIBLE housing and the high risk of the Zika Virus being contracted, not to mention the risk of AIDS in a country like Brazil as well.

As GOTY said, these athletes are going to be remembered more for their trials and tribulations than a lot of athletes in previous Games.

Eh, the World Cup was generally OK from what I remember.

I can't stand the Summer Olympics, but I guess it'll be a couple weeks of tape-delayed stuff on TV at all hours so whatever.

Brazil is less stable now than when they had the world cup. I cant imagine being a water sport Olympian and having to go into the open sewer they call a beach. Anyone competing in that water might as well start drinking toilet water to build up a immunity.

Re: 2016 Rio Olympics

A fire was started where some Australian athletes are being housed. When they returned, stuff was missing...

Computers and clothing turned up missing after Friday’s fire, which was investigated for arson. The Australian team initially refused to inhabit the athletes’ village owing to its being “uninhabitable,” though the team moved in Wednesday after being assured that “all defects” had been repaired—except that during the blaze, the delegation realized the building’s fire alarms were disconnected.
