Save situation.

Have I been wrong about what constitutes a save situation all this time or is this some kind of issue with The Show?

My latest game went into extra innings tied at three. Anthony Rizzo blasted a three run shot to give the Cubs a 6-3 lead in the top of the 10th. In the bottom of the 10th I put in Hector Rondon to close the deal. He proceeds to strike out the side... but didn't get credited with a save.

I thought a save situation was when a team is up by three or fewer runs.

Yea, he should have got the save. I also noticed that if you get a base hit and advance to second a throw they give you a double, which is wrong. This game is starting to get beyond ridiculous with this stuff.

Re: Save situation.

Did Rondon come in fresh for the bottom of the tenth? If I'm not mistaken Rondon would be up for the win and therefore not able to pick up the save. Had Rondon come in and got 2 outs in the 10th and then relieved by another pitcher, Rondon gets the win and the other guy would get the save. I believe that is how it should work. If Rondon didn't get the win then I have no idea lol.

This is correct. You don't get a save if you are the winning pitcher.

Whoever pitched the 9th would get the win and Rondon should get a save.

In a tie game whoever pitched the inning before the go ahead run scores gets the W.

You aren't eligible for a Win unless you are the pitcher of record when your team takes the lead. In your scenario, the winning pitcher would be whatever reliever comes in after your team takes the lead, which would lead to all sorts of shenanigans.

There is one situation where pitchers are only eligible to pick up wins AFTER their team takes the lead: before the end of the 5th inning.

Example: In an away game, my team scores in the top of the 1st inning. I pitch in the bottom of the inning, I complete at least five innings of work, and my team never surrenders the lead. I get credit for the win, even though my team was winning before I started pitching.

Example: I take a nasty come-backer while pitching with the lead in the 5th. I cannot complete the inning. You come in in relief and complete the inning. Our team never surrenders the lead. You get credit for the win, and I get an ugly bruise.

In the OPs example, the pitcher of record is whomever recorded the final out in the bottom of the 9th. He would be credited with the win. Based on the description, Rondon would get the save. Either the game done goofed, or the OP was mistaken about the situation.

Re: Save situation.

That's a bug that's been in for a while, at least as far back as MLB 12. In extra innings, it won't register a save if the lead is 3. It has to be 2 runs or less. Rondon should have gotten the save in your game.
