Just got 16 for Christmas and had a few quick questions...

What exactly is Ball Hawk, Auto Strafe, etc.? I know they've been in the game for some time, but I never understood what they did. Would you recommend turning them off or on in CFM?

Also, is there auto subs in this game? When I was putting in the sliders I wanted to use for my CFM, I couldn't find anywhere to set the auto subs at. I found all the other sliders, but not those. Am I missing something?

Auto subs are in the coach section.

Ball Hawk is the ability for your user controlled defender to automatically track the ball in the air and go for the interception attempt. This is used by holding Triangle (Y on Xbox) while the ball is in the air. Once you hold that button, you no longer need to move your player. He will continue running and attempt to get the ball at its highest point. Like you said, its been in the game for a few years now. Personally, since they've added the feature, I exclusively use it as my method of going for interceptions, as opposed to the old method of timing to hit the catch button. Its been much more reliable for me to use Ballhawk. There is definitely much more of a risk factor in this years madden than the previous few this feature has been in though, because of the aggressive catching mechanic that Wide Receivers have available to them now. So do use ball hawk appropriately or else it can result in huge offensive plays.

Auto strafe is also a defensive user controlled mechanic. In previous Madden games (before auto strafe was introduced) if you wanted to strafe left and right without fully turning the hips of your user controlled defender, you would have to hold a shoulder button (L2/LT) to do so. With auto strafe, the game essentially decides for you the proper time to strafe or turn your hips. I don't really like the auto strafe feature. I think it handicaps you if you are someone who users a linebacker or safety. I don't feel it does a good job of making that decision of when to strafe and when not to, which can lead to some awkward pursuit angles, and huge plays happening off of them. So if you are one who likes to user defend with a linebacker or safety, i recommend turning auto strafe off, but there may be others who would say differently.

Hope this helps!

I guess I should've looked for auto subs harder, I have no clue why I didn't check in the coach section. Thanks!

Great detail information about ball hawk and auto strafe, I appreciate it. What about heat seeker and switch assist? I think I understand what they do, but I don't know if I should turn them off or on.

Also, one last question. What is the best setting when it comes to the CPU progressing their players (weekly, every four weeks, or end of season)?

Re: Just got 16 for Christmas and had a few quick questions...

Heat seeker automatically guides defenders to the ball carrier. Sort of like ball hawk after the offensive player already has the ball. Holding x/a activated this when the setting is on.

I set the cpu to progress after the season. They seem to spend their xp smarter this way since they don't save up xp to progress the higher attributes or skills.
