JEFFERY AND BEARS AGREE TO DEAL WORTH 85M

Alshon Jeffery headlines the list of Chicago Bears players that re-upped with the team ahead of free agency today. Jeffery has bee a mainstay on the roster since being drafted in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft and established himself as the number one receiver following Brandon Marshall's trade to New York in 2015. Bears coach John Fox and Offensive Coordinator Adam Gase were believed to be very impressed with Jeffery's improvement throughout the season and some sources claim that the coaching staff believe Jeffery has another level he can get to. After much speculation throughout the season over the final terms of the contract, with no doubt as to whether Jeffery would be staying in Chicago, the final deal is believed to be around the 6yr/ 85m area.

Also re-signing with the Bears are starting centre Will Montgomery, rookie running back Jeremy Langford, fullback Bear Pascoe, linebacker Shea McLellin and safety Ryan Mundy. The front office, led by General Manager Ryan Pace, notably failed to get Matt Forte signed to an extension but there's still hope that a deal can get done either before or during free agency.

BEARS RE-SIGNINGS:
Will Montgomery 2yr/ 7.7m
Jeremy Langford 1yr/ 900k
Bear Pascoe 3yr/3m
Shea McLellin 4yr/ 4.77m
Ryan Mundy 2yr/ 2.2m
Alshon Jeffrey 6yr/ 85m

HIRINGS ACROSS THE LEAGUE:
Lovie Smith- Minnesota Vikings
Jim Tomsula- Cincinatti Bengals
Arthur Cowans- Miami Dolphins
Ryan Mack- Jacksonville Jaguars
Tom Singler- Green Bay Packers

BEARS SHOW TIME TO WIN IS NOW WITH FREE AGENCY SPLURGE

The Chicago Bears signalled their intentions for the upcoming season with a major splurge in free agency. Led by General Manager Ryan Pace and Head Coach John Fox, the Bears went into the period with their focus primarily on improving a defense that was below-average at best last season. They managed to achieve their aim with several signings made across the board which included headline free agent, defensive end Aldon Smith. Smith held talks with other franchises but it was the Bears presentation of future plans as well as a 7yr/102m offer that helped the sought-after player make his decision. Smith will be joined by veterans Haloti Ngata, signed on a team-friendly 1yr/9m, and Demarcus Ware, who also signed a 1yr/4m contract. Rolando McClain, 5yr/32m, Barry Church, 5yr/25m and Jeremy Mincey, 1yr/1.75m, all come over from Dallas while safety Eric Berry signs on a 4yr/7m contract.Tight end Marcedes Lewis (1yr/1m) will back up Martellus Bennett following Zach Miller's retirement with Lamar Miller (5yr/12m) replacing the outgoing Matt Forte. Other signings include Richie Incognito on a 1yr/1m deal and Ryan Fitzpatrick to bring competition for the insecure QB spot on the roster. Fitzpatrick signed for 1yr/4m.

Across the league, the Houston Texans were the most impressive buyers this off-season. On a defense that already has JJ Watt, Jadoveon Clowney and Brian Cushing, the Texans added Brandon Spikes, Justin Tuck and Bruce Irvin. Oakland Raiders brought in plenty of offense with Ty Hilton signing alongside key OL additions in Alex Boone and Russell Okung. Tamba Hali shores up the defense as Oakland attempt to recover from losing Smith to the Bears. The Colts risked it all in their attempts to improve their defense and offensive line, as they let Hilton walk before seeing LT Anthony Castonzo sign for the Vikings. Andre Johnson and Frank Gore retired with Trent Cole getting cut as the Colts front office cleared cap space. All that they could salvage was a troubled Greg Hardy, a solid running back in Alfred Morris and a possible All-Pro in Nigel Bradham. Peyton Manning's retirement has done little in affecting the Broncos Super Bowl aspirations as they snapped up Nate Solder to protect Manning's successor while also forking out for the services of another former Patriot in Chandler Jones and Minnesota's former safety Robert Blanton. They also franchise-tagged Von Miller. One player they had to let walk was Demaryius Thomas, who signed for the Dallas Cowboys to team up with the strong core of wide receivers there in Dez Bryant, Terrence Williams, Devon Street and Cole Beasley. How does a defensive coordinator plan for the Cowboys offense when Tony Romo has either Bryant or Thomas to pick out? The Buccaneers signed defensive end Mike Daniels and guard Kevin Zeitler while the Vikings persuaded George Iloka to join them along with Castonzo. Brandon Marshall left the Broncos for the Packers as the St Louis Rams signed up Nick Foles to be their QB for many years with Stefan Wisniewski agreeing to be their starting center. The Arizona Cardinals struggled last season but they hope the additions of Matt Forte and Kiko Alonso will change around their fortunes with Matthew Stafford being the prime focus of the Lions offseason. They signed troubled wide receiver Josh Gordon and and left tackle Kelvin Beachum to improve their offense. Cedric Thornton added to an already impressive Eagles defense while Seattle lost another of their key players on that side of the ball with Brandon Mebane signing for the Steelers.

DEFENSE STEPS UP FOR THE BEARS
Indianapolis Colts 12-27 Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears had their defense to thank for a huge victory over Indianapolis Colts in week 1 of the NFL 2016 season. With football finally back, fans were clamoring up and down the country to get their fix of football following the seven month sabbatical with those at Soldier Field treated to a fascinating, high-paced encounter.

Colts won the coin flip and chose to put Andrew Luck and his new-look offensive line out on the field first. They managed to get the ball down to about the 30 yard line before a key tackle by Shea McLellin, 1 of 10 for the linebacker, on Donte Moncrief prevented a 1st down being granted. The Colts opted for the field goal as Shaun Suisham put them up 3-0 early into the match. The Bears responded poorly however, with Jay Cutler, as he's been prone to do, stepping up and throwing an interception into the waiting hands of Vontae Davis. Newly-acquired QB Geno Smith looked on from the sideline with some maybe feeling Cutler could be pulled from the game. That wasn't to be the case but more on that later. Luckily for the Bears, the Colts failed to do anything with their excellent field position and punted away. The Bears decided to run the ball for a successive amount of times on their next possession before Cutler threw a touchdown pass inside the redzone to Eddie Royal for a 7-3 lead.

The second quarter began with the Colts struggling to move the ball on offense. The frustration was so much for coach Chuck Pagano that he opted for a fake punt on 4th and 7 but, unsurprisingly, failed to get any success from the trick play. This would lead to the Bears offense starting in FG position and they decided to play it conservatively to allow Robbie Gould to step up and kick the Bears 10-3 in front. The Colts offensive struggles were the theme of the game, Luck not being giving enough time in the pocket nor did he have any clear no.1 option to throw to. Eric Berry, a new member of the Bears, had an exceptional game as did both inside linebackers of Jon Bostic and Rolando McClain. Aldon Smith, the 102m man, had four tackles as all defenders played effectively as a unit.

The first drive of the second half for Cutler & co. led to a Lamar Miller touchdown from the redzone. Miller & Jeremy Langford look to be a good 1-2 punch for the Bears and with Bear Pascoe also possessing the ability to gain yards for the offense, they seem to be set in the running game. Luck would go 3-and-out again before Cutler threw another interception, though this time it was on a 3rd-and-long with it giving the Bears better field position than a punt would have. Still, it's a sign that he might not be able to lead a team as talented as the Bears into the playoffs. The third quarter was about to close before a Luck pass from 30 yards in his own half landed in the hands of Moncrief for the touchdown. And the Colts had life again. It was a harsh one for the Bears to give up, a SS blitz had left Moncrief in a bunch of space to make a play and luckily for the Colts he took advantage of it.

Soldier Field was a tense stadium as the fourth quarter began but another good possession by the Bears showed there was little need to worry. A pass by Cutler inside his own half, looked to have been overthrown, was hauled in by Eddie Royal fantastically to push the wide receiver into 100 yards for the game. Miller was only too happy to rush in another TD and put the Bears up 2 scores, 24-10. Luck would get the ball and enough time to mount a comeback but he got desperate and threw the ball into the hands of Ryan Mundy for an interception that basically ended the game. Robbie Gould would get another FG from the ensuing possession before a Roy Miller safety on Cutler would see the game out, 27-12.
