Is Ryan O'Reilly elite? A Buffalo Sabres Dynasty of Strong Takes.
Hard Knocks: Buffalo Sabres 2015-16 Season Proudly brought you by Trump 2016: Making America Great Again! Derek Proudly
As members of the press filter in to the Buffalo Sabres locker room at the beginning of training camp, an upbeat vibe encloses the room. The ghosts of tanking past, the crowd booing a victory, seem to have vanished. The players are at ease, possibly because of the massive overhaul General Manager Tim Murray undertook as the off-season begun.
Ted Nolan is gone. Cody Hodgson was bought out. Mikhail Grigorenko was traded. The storyline seemed to paint the Sabres as the brides left at the altar; they failed to sign coveted head coach Mike Babcock nor did they win the draft lottery despite positioning themselves to be the favorites. Yet, it appears the club got the best consolation prizes. Dan Byslma, the former Pittsburgh Penguins Head Coach who guided them to a Stanley Cup Championship in 2009 is here. Instead of Connor McDavid, the Sabres got Jack Eichel instead. If Don Cherry was American, he'd be hard-pressed to bet against the Sabres moving forward.
The team made splashes at the draft, acquiring lethal two-way forward Ryan O'Reilly from the Colorado Avalanche, as well as goaltender Robin Lehner from the Ottawa Senators. On the eve of camp, the team shored up their defense by signing defenseman Cody Franson to a two-year deal to help quarterback the power play. And lest we forget about left winger Evander Kane; the power forward is set to make his Buffalo Sabres debut after being acquired by the club in February in a blockbuster from the Winnipeg Jets.
The Sabres are a club moving forward. Both Murray and Byslma are putting the past behind the organization. The last two seasons will be considered the dark ages; a time in their history where it was necessary to rebuild the club from scratch and get the pieces ready to make a run towards the Stanley Cup. They may not make the playoffs, but the club is ready to become one of the elite organizations in hockey within the next couple of season. That isn't going to be a small feat, considering they share a division with the Eastern Conference Champion Tampa Bay Lightning, the consistent Detroit Red Wings, the Montreal Canadiens, and the Ottawa Senators.
Here is the Buffalo Sabres Training Camp Roster, presented by Toyota:

Pre-Season Wrap Up; no surprises with team moving forward Bernie Sanders is a Socialist! - Old Republicans, everywhere Matthew Vernon
A quick word from HeroWorship:
So, let's get a few things straight. This morning, I made my way to Orchard Park, NY to attend my first live Buffalo Bills game since 2012, and not only did I get badly sunburned, but Tom Brady manages to throw for over 400 yards and the Bills STILL don't have an answer for that gorilla they call Rob Gronkowski (he's from Buffalo, ppl forget that). I was still impressed with the club, keeping it within eight with 1:15 left in the fourth quarter (because I'm a true fan who paid over face value for my ticket, I stayed the entire game). A quick interception later, and I walked out of the stadium with my Sammy Watkins jersey over my shoulder and a burnt face that's going to get the office chuckling in joy when I report to work tomorrow morning.
If anyone is reading this that lives in Nashville, TN, HeroWorship will be conducting a four day tour of the city. Heading to the Predators/Oilers tilt on Saturday night while holding up a sign calling the Oilers "cheaters" for winning the draft lottery and likely consuming one too many beers on Broadway Street. Then off to the Titans/Bills game on Sunday, where I'll be reminded of the "Music City Miracle" while trying to get a buzz going before entering the stadium. Just keep an eye on the eleven o'clock news; I might get arrested for fighting someone after reminding them they were one yard short of a Super Bowl victory.
Holy crap, I suck
So I played nearly all of the pre-season games (I simmed the third period of one after having to leave for an appointment). I started off on default All-Star (Xbox One) and the results weren't pretty:
9-4 Loss @ Boston
8-0 Loss @ Florida
6-2 Loss @ Ottawa
This is what happens when you only play HUT in NHL 15. I switched to pro settings and managed to beat the Canadiens (6-5; I simmed the third) and 8-4 over the Red Wings before switching to Tito's sliders for the last two (6-5 SO loss against Tampa Bay and 4-2 win over Toronto on Pro). I also switched the period times from eight minutes (first two games) to seven minutes (four games) to settling on six. Six seems like a good number, but I'm gonna switch back to All-Star with the first month of the season. If I get crushed, so be it. You're only going to get better by the difficulty you play on, and let's be frank; the Sabres (IRL) aren't going to make the playoffs (I pegged them at 86 points, which is nearly a 40 point increase). I think signing Franson really helps, as we should have at least three top-four caliber defensemen (Franson, Ristolainen and Bogosian, with Pysyk developing into one by next year). Of course, all four have right handed shots, but oh well.
Sabres Finalize Roster as Season gets under way

As Buffalo Sabres Head Coach Dan Bylsma walks to the podium, he quickly tells the media simply - "no surprises at the roster front".
The club revealed their 23-man roster that will take the ice once the season begins. Only a few minor tidbits to note:
- It appears the Sabres will utilize all four right handed shots at once. Cody Franson will shift over to the LD position, while the other three remain at bay.
- Robin Lehner is the tentative starter, for now. As Byslma noted, he'll like to have Chad Johnson play a few games in the first month of the season to get a feel on how the goaltending performs. Aside from one solid season (.925 save percentage in 27 games with the Boston Bruins in 2013-14), Johnson isn't much to write home about. Bylsma admitted that the depth at goaltending could be a huge question mark as the season wears on.
- Mike Weber is relegated to spot duty on the defensive front. Weber has played in 64 and 68 games in each of the past two seasons, but Carlo Colaiacovo won the spot in camp, and Weber will have to wait his turn. The 27-year old defensemen is in the final year of a three-year deal, and is currently the longest tenured Sabre on the roster.

I agree. I just went through your Red Wings dynasty. AJ with his Devils (which hopefully he'll get some content running soon). Plus, it's fun to do on the side, and keeps you interested in your own dynasty in itself.
I have been doing dynasties online for longer than I care to admit, but it's a fun way to check out how others are doing and have a "journal" of some sort for your own. I hope we can have a big community this year. Even if it's slow (which, with jobs, school, boyfriends/girlfriends, activities, etc.), it shows how passionate people are.

Hope you follow along and even jump into a dynasty of your own!

Buffalo Sabres October Report Carly Fiornia will kill us all AND blames the victim in the Patrick Kane case Matthew Vernon & PFTCommenter (Note: There is a real PFTCommenter, who delivers barralfire NFL takes for SBNation. He is so funny that I'm going to rip him off for the purposes of a dynasty posted on Operation Sports. He can be followed on Twitter @PFTCommenter. It's about TELLING, not SPELLING)
It's fair to say fans around Western New York had very high expectations for the Sabres entering the 2015-16 season. When the team rolled off four straight victories to start the season, Twitter was buzzed with comments from Sabres fans who started to imagine the club making one of the greatest turnarounds in professional sports.
The Sabres, however, did level off some of the euphoria towards the end of the month.
The club finished the month off at 1-3-0 after starting 6-1-0. Injuries have taken their toll on the entire roster; both Johan Larsson and Tyler Ennis are expected to miss the next couple of weeks nursing injuries suffered during the Sabres 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Jack Eichel missed two games with a groin injury as well, but is currently leading the club in points with seven.
Ryan O'Reilly, who signed a seven year deal with the Sabres after being acquired in a blockbuster with the Colorado Avalanche, has mustered up a mere four points in eleven games, including sporting the worst plus/minus on the entire roster (-4). Fans have voiced their displeasure with his performance so far in this young season.
Head Coach Dan Byslma isn't concerned. Before the season began, Byslma said he would take cues from NBA Head Coach Gregg Popovich in terms of resting his players; so far, that has resulted in the club swapping out players during back-to-back contests. In those two instances, the Sabres are 0-2-0 right now.
Goaltending has been streaky at best. While Robin Lehner is performing above the league average in terms of save percentage (.916), he's posted two games below .900. Chad Johnson has done the same, even posted a horrendous .736 save percentage during the Sabres blowout loss to the Flyers on Friday.
The Sabres will play thirteen games next month, and must get back on their winning ways. While the club remains in second place in the Atlantic Division, the team's play may not be sustainable to keep them in that position.

Sabres Report: Jack Eichel is the hero the sabres need but don't deserve (please note these strong takes are SATIRE. The spelling errors are intentional, we think M.V.)
Lets get one thing straight,, the NHL is a copycat league. teams like the Chicago Blackhawks and Pittsburgh Penguins clary show that in order for a team to make a serious run to the stanly cup the team must loose a season or 4 to stockple draft picks and get young players ready to be the Next Man Up.
The Sabres did this last season although they couldnt even win the lottery! Luckly, experts like Jeff O Neill said that the recent draft had 2 surefire first overall picks. instead, the Oilers got Connor McDavid but the sabres truly won the draft with selecting a cornfed american player who showed solid padlevel with bud light cans in snapchat videos.
It has probably helpped the Sabres have kept him with Matt Molson Canadian and whatever swill exists in Latvia. Jack Eichel has proven to be an Elite player ready to carry the sabres to glory. Still,, on a roster that has Evander "Not Patrick" Kane on the roster, you have to worry that he would have been influenced by Kanes consistent "me-first" attitude that was gratefully told by strong wrighters like gary lawless. Since the Sabres plan on keping Kane around for the forseeable future, we can only hope that American Jack doesnt wind up doing controversal things like using money as an phone. ppl forget he was named after Evander Holyfield who litteraly used his cash for bad too, Fans should storm the arena wondering why Tim Murray didnt pursue a true throwback like Patrick instead. Maybe the Sabres would have won the last few games, which last i checked, is the only thing that matters.
Those kind of distractions can surley ruin a players career. The Sabres lockerroom isnt the place for Eichel. He probably wishs he went to the Boston Bruins. ppl forget hes a patroits fan and would have benefited from being in his hometown and probably meeting with true pros like Tom Brady and Bill Belechek who would have steered him to lead by example and fix those distractions. The Sabres better hope Evander doesnt influence Jack enough where hes more concerned about the amount of "likes" he gets on his Instragam page instead of Focusing on the amount of "wins" they get in the standings.
Sabres Road Grader of the Month: Jamie McGinn
Jamie McGinn was the "throwaway" in the mega deal the Sabres made for Ryan O'Reilly. While O'Reilly has been a disaster, Jamie McGinn is focused on the clock. McGinn is a classic grinder who drives into the net and not into coffee shops. I couldve given this award to him or David Legwand but Jamie doesnt take breaks.
Before the season begun, it was clear that Jamie McGinn brings his lunchpail to work everyday. He brings it to practice and to the games,,, and thanks to injures to Tyler Ennis and Johan Larsson, McGinn is getting pushed up the depth chart. He emphazes the Next Man Up mantra. In football terms (which i'm a PWFA member) hes your Danny Woodhead. Like Danny, McGinn didnt let the "smoke" in Colorado deter his abilities with the Avalanche. In Buffalo, the only fumes hell worry about are the ones coming from the cheerios factory next door. hes a blue collar guy, which makes him popular among the sabres fans, since at least one blue collar guy still has a job in buffalo.
Buffalo Sabres 2015-16 Season Record: 7-4-0 (14 Points) Atlantic Division Standing: 2nd Eastern Conference Standing: 5th National Hockey League Standing: 11th Goals For: 31 (T-6th) Goals Against: 27 (T-17th) Power Play Percentage: 21.1% (9th) Penalty Kill Percentage: 50.0% (30th) Home Record: 5-2-0 Away Record: 2-2-0 Overtime Record: 0-0-0 Shootout Record: 0-0-0

Sabres Edge: November proves to be warming
Nicolas Deslauriers was en fuego throughout the month of November
As the snow begins to fall in the city, the Buffalo Sabres's locker room feels like a day at the beach. Much of this has to do with the recent winning streak surged by the club after after dropping five straight games to begin the month of November. The circus that surrounded the Sabres began at the beginning of the month, when long-time Sabres defensemen Mike Weber told Buffalo News beat writer Mike Harrington about his frustrations concerning his inability to get into the lineup.
After the article was in the papers the next day, General Manager Tim Murray acted quickly. Weber would spend only a few more hours with the Sabres, as he found a suitor in the Carolina Hurricanes. At 11:03 am on November 2nd, Murray called Weber off the ice during a Sabres practice and informed him of the trade. The Sabres acquired a fifth round pick in the deal for the 2016 draft, and Mike Weber was going to enter a situation where his minutes will increase. Roughly an hour later, he called the agents of several free agent defensemen looking to replace Weber's spot on the roster. By November 5th, former Sabres defensemen Jordan Leopold signed a one-year contract after going through a physical.
Still, the team was losing. After losing to the Florida Panthers on November 12th, going to 0-5-0 in the month, Murray called Dan Byslma and informed him to tell rookie left winger Sam Reinhart the bad news; he was to get on a plane and fly to Lehigh Valley, PA, because he was sent to the Rochester Americans, the Sabres AHL affiliate. Reinhart was heart broken about the news, but vowed to make the experience a positive one. He landed in Lehigh Valley in the afternoon, and would score two goals in his season debut for the Americans that night. Byslma then called a mandatory meeting on Saturday morning. It wasn't filled with sunshine and rainbows.
That night, against the San Jose Sharks, the Sabres would finally snap their six-game losing streak dating back to October. On the power play in Overtime, rookie Jack Eichel sealed the victory for the Sabres. The fans were electric, howling outside the arena, celebrating the victory. Depsite dropping the next game to the Dallas Stars, the Sabres felt destined to finally bounce back.
And they did. In a big way. The offense clicked; the Sabres won their last six games while scoring four goals or more in each. Ryan O'Reilly became a scoring machine, potting home his first career hat trick during the Sabres 5-1 victory over the Nashville Predators. Just a few days later in Nashville, Evander Kane would have a four point night as the Sabres outscored the Predators 12-2 in a two-game set. By the end of the month, the Sabres scored 44 goals (3.38 goals for game) while the team was shooting at a very high 11.2% in the month. The defensive game was rock solid, allowing a mere 22.31 shots against per game, but the goaltending wasn't up to snuff, combining for a .897 Save Percentage in the month.
