NBA 2K16 CAP Rundown???
A lot of us here are big CAP guys. Whether it be for creating future draft classes for myLeaguers and myGMers to enjoy or remaking NBA legends that have yet to make a 2K debut (Webber, Miller, Barkley, etc). CAP is a HUGE part of 2k's hardcore fans.
Unfortunately, I feel like CAP is often left in the shadows when it comes time for a new 2K game. I always end up disappointed that something is either broken (Face Scan and jumpshot previews most recently), removed from a previous 2K (accessories, body mass editing), or just plain missing (no tattoos or headbands!?)
With 2K's recently announced Pro-Am and myLeague team editor, it looks like they may be going all-in in regards to customization this year. I'm expecting big things, which might be a bad move, from CAP this year. Below are the changes to CAP that I hope we see. I'll edit this post as info drops on CAP to give a verdict on what 2K did right, wrong, etc.
BODY TYPES
This is a big one. In 2K15, if you wanted to make a burly, stocky big (think Barkley or Chuck Hayes), you were out of luck. What about a lanky-from-head-to-toe player like Kevin Durant or Terrence Ross? Can't. CAP and myPlayer both suffer from this. In draft classes and Park/JRC, every single player had the exact same body type. Wingspan and Shoulder Width editing was great, and I hope they make a return in 2K16, but they have no affect at all on the player's entire body mass. In the NBA, there are so many different body types. In 2K, save for arm length and shoulder width, there is only one. The strange part is this was an editable feature in past CAPs. It was extremely bare bones though so I don't really miss it. I'm hoping for customization of individual body parts. Slightly related, here's to also hoping listed weight actually matters in gameplay this year. 300 lb players got knocked down just as easily as 150 lb lightweights.
verdict: Okay, so there's no body types for CAP or your myPlayer in 2K16. Weight once again has no influence. Wingpsan and shoulder editing make a return, at least. But CAP's biggest need is once again ignored. Also, they took away the ability to change muscle definition. Why?? My grade in this category for 2K16 is an F. I half-way didn't expect much of an upgrade, but taking away features is inexcusable
SKIN TONE VARIANCE
If every person in the world was made up of just 6 different skin tones, the world would be pretty damn bland. This isn't the case in the NBA or at your local park, so I don't think it should be in NBA 2K as well. This feature should really be a slider instead of just 6 choices. It's annoying because I personally fit somewhere between 2 and 3 but I'm forced to make my myCareer player either lighter or darker than what I actually am. If you don't fit on this same 6-tone spectrum, you probably feel the same way. Someone like Ben Simmons is a great example. 2K's CAP does not have a complexion that works for him. Also, the complexion your Face Scan gave your player often did not blend in with limited skin choices you had. Unfortunately, we've had these same 6 skin tones in NBA 2K games since 2K9 which makes think it's unlikely they will change it if they haven't already. Here's hoping 7 years is the breaking point though. It's the next step in having more diverse CAPs.
verdict: Nothing has changed here either. The same 6 skin tones are back. We're now entering our eighth year of these same 6 choices. I wish I could say I get used to it the longer it goes on, but it actually just gets more disappointing. Grade is a D-
TATTOO CUSTOMIZATION
I don't even need to say much about this. Y'all saw that trailer already. Bravo, 2K. That's exactly what kind of in-depth customization makes us diehards drool. However, I don't think this feature has been confirmed for CAP yet, only myCareer at the moment? I'll hold off on ruling a verdict for this one until we get confirmation. In 2K15, your myCareer player had tattoo options while the CAP side did not. Hopefully it's not the same in 2K16.
verdict: 2K16 WOULD be looking at it's best grade so far but sadly that's not the case. I'm sad to report 2K has once again given extreme priority in favor of myPlayer editing over CAP. Not only is the awesome tattoo editing feature not in CAP, there's actually NO tattoo options at all. Again. For the second year in a row. This one might be the biggest disappointment so far because of how hyped I was for CAP purposes. The tattoo editing itself is great and would warrant an A, but it's not a CAP feature at all. Another big F.
IN-GAME ANIMATIONS
I think this would be a great addition to CAP. If we wanted to add Steph Curry's chest bump or James Harden's pot stir animations to our CAPs, I think we should. We can already adopt NBA player's sig shots and layups, so why not this? There could even be some custom choices as well like roars, shimmies, etc after big shots. Even some of the NBA 2k15 Park celebrations could work, as long as the animations were triggered at the right time. This is more of a pipe dream than the others on this list, but it would add a lot more fun to CAPs. Side note, I know we can already edit CAP's pre-game animations but did anyone else find this feature kind of broken in 2K15? I played a lot of games with teams that had nothing but CAPs on the roster. Out of probably 50+ games played, a player's pregame animation happened maybe once or twice.
verdict: While there's no in-game animations editable for CAPs in 2K16, they did add two new additions that sort of fit in with what I was thinking of with this request. You can now edit your created player's dunk emotion (calm or intense) and whether or not they chew gum. Not much, but nice to see 2K16 do something unique. Grade is a B.
AGE DIVERSITY
No matter how hard you try to make older players in CAP, all of them will end up looking like they're in their young 20s. Changing their age has zero impact on the player's facial features, unlike in older 2K games. I think this needs a revival. Bring back gray or salt-n-peppa hair color as well. Boris Diaw and Tim Duncan would be down with this. Even let me make an Uncle Drew if I want.
verdict: A little something new here as well. CAP can now have gray or white hair, among several other new hair colors. Unfortunately, this doesn't extend to facial hair color so things can look a bit off. Raising the age of players still does nothing to affect facial features, however, which would've been a big plus. 2K16 gets a C here.
FACIAL EDITING
Another thing I couldn't get right in NBA 2K15 was making CAPs look unique from one another. Beards and hair styles obviously helped, but the faces all looked pretty much the same no matter how much you scaled the sliders. Combined with the lack of body types, this led to draft classes that were pretty much made of clones. The facial customization in 2K15 wasn't bad by any means.. but I feel like there's a lot of improvement that can be done here. I won't even talk about face scanning. It was borderline broken in 2K15 and wasn't even part of CAP.
verdict: Absolutely no changes on this front. It's a carbon copy of 2K15 in every facet. This combined with no body editing and so few skin tones, expect 2K16 draft classes to be much, much more of the same ol'. The facial editing from 2K15 isn't the worst thing ever but I hate that they didn't add a single new thing in this department. Grade: D
ACCESSORIES
Accessories need to be better this year, period. There's a lot of people who felt 2K15 was lacking in this area. And to be honest, I'm not usually one of those people who split hairs over accessories. However, the absence of headbands for CAPs in 2K15 was really lame. I also think it's about time goggles and face masks show up in CAP. We also know mouth pieces are in the game from the trailers but will they be available here?
verdict: Will touch on this later. I've been hearing there's a lot of glitches going on with the accessories though. I will wait a bit longer before I dive into this area, possibly until those glitches are resolved
HAIR
The CAP system needs better cuts, plain and simple. Enough of these $6 haircuts where the barber had a stroke in the middle. For those of us who don't rock the Duke Starting 5, the options left are an eyesore. For folks with straight hair, it doesn't get much better either. Also, It couldn't hurt to bring hair lengthening back as well. It would be major if 2K16 lets us use NBA player's hair but I really, really doubt that happens.
verdict: Some new cuts this year. Not the biggest variety but there are some solid additions. I have no idea why they added so many types of cornrows though. Hardly anyone rocks that ish anymore. I like the new additions though overall, plus the new colors. I'll slide them a B grade here.
That's all I have for now. Let me know if I'm missing anything or shoutout something you think would be a solid addition to CAP. I'll check the replies to this thread and will probably add a bit more to this list later.
