Pitcher Repertoires

How do the developers determine the pitches that the added pitchers throw. I follow the Giants, and like what Josh Osich has done out of the bullpen. I noticed that his most effective pitch has been the cutter, but he doesn't have the pitch in his repertoire for this game.

Also, I like to use pitchers that have movement both ways, which is why Johnny Cueto has done so well for me. I wanted to use new Giants starter, Mike Leake, since he also has decent hitting stats for a pitcher. I noticed that he doesn't have a sinker/2-seamer, even though he is a ground ball pitcher, and is the pitch he throws most often.

I don't follow other teams as close, but I'm willing to bet that many guys have the wrong pitches assigned or are just plain missing a pitch that they usually throw.

Re: Pitcher Repertoires

My understanding is that they use PitchFX to get the repertoires. It is an imperfect system when it comes to categorizing pitches. For instance, some pitchers get both cutters and sliders in the game when they only throw sliders. The computer system in PitchFX sees sliders that didn't break as much and it misreads them as cutters. I hope this makes sense...

I could definitely see the slider/cutter thing, but Mike Leake not having a sinker/2-seamer makes even less sense now. According to Pitchf/x, Leake's most thrown pitch through his career is a sinker. Him not having any fastball with that type of movement is just plain wrong.

Yea I have to agree its not easy getting every pitcher perfectly but leake is a sinkerballer like Tim Hudson it is very weird that that is the pitch he is most known for but doesn't have it.

I just looked at PitchFX and it reads him throwing a sinker 51% of the time so I'm not sure what gives with him specifically.

You have certainly found an anomaly. Luckily, he is one of the exceptions rather than the rule. Have found the repertoire of most pitchers to generally be true to life.

Re: Pitcher Repertoires

The biggest problem with SCEA and pitching repertories is that they put too much of a speed difference between the fastball and change up. If you looked at the pitch f/x for every pitcher you'd notice that a lot of the guys in the game throw a much faster change up in real life than they one they are given in the game.

They've screwed up giants pitchers for years. They have Chris Heston with no sinker as well when he has lived on a huge sinker all year. If I watched more teams I'd probably notice more pitchers without their real pitches.
