Scanning photos: 300 dpi or 600 dpi?

Hi, I am about to scan in 600+ photos into digital format. Can you tell me if it matters if I choose 300 dpi or 600 dpi? I performed a couple of test scans and noticed that the file size was larger in terms of megabytes and in terms of canvas size, but other than this, why would you suggest I use 600 dpi rather than 300?

It takes a tad bit longer if I set my scanner to scan using 600 dpi as well. This would be an impediment to the time I have to scan these, of course.

I'd be grateful for any comments the community can provide.

600 would be best for printing. 300 would be more like a high def resolution for viewing on a screen. Even 150 for screen viewing is usually adequate. Depends on what you're trying to do and how fussy you are when viewing things, especially on screen.

If these are copies of family photos I would do best as possible but that's me.
