What's your scouting method?

Playing madden again for the first time in a few years. How do you guys go about scouting? Seems super random.

Re: What's your scouting method?

i get the double xp bonus for my coach, then you get about 3500-4000 SP a year, I just scout 7 or 8 guys' development trait and try to draft 2 superstars. I always reach on my picks to make sure those superstars get drafted, if you target all your training on them (and past draft's superstars) you'll always have 10-12 guys in the 90's on your team. some years you may only get 1 superstar and a 'quick' development guy, those are good too but aim for superstars.

Re: What's your scouting method?

I go based off need and BPA. Example: my Giants franchise, I needed a LBer to shore up the defense, a LG to finish the O-Line, and then I could go BPA from there. Ended with my future MLB (who's currently playing OLB due to the roster construction), a bruising LG, a special teams expert (LBer with good physical traits, but no good intangibles and slow development. storyline guy of the guy who ate himself out of the first round), a Pro-Bowl backup DE (like JPP in 2011 behind Tuck and Osi), plus some depth guys and a kicker in the later rounds.

It helps if you know what you want when you're scouting.

Re: What's your scouting method?

I have an easier way to scout that I'm currently uploading to YT. The thread linked above is great but my way almost guarantees you finding multiple SS and quick development guys.

After it uploads I will let you guys know and post it in my arena if I'm not allowed to post it directly on the forum.

Edit: Here's the link to my scouting/drafting video with a draft and the results also captured. Rushed the video because I got tired of the questions on twitter. Just raw footage. Hopefully it helps.

Link to arena if mods erase the above link.

Thanks for the video man! I'm gonna give it a try. It sure makes scouting a lot faster.

The reason this works is the physical grade is a combined grade for the physical attributes, speed, agility, acceleration and strength etc. Intangible measures non physical attributes, primarily awareness.

Also not to take anything away from your video, which is well done. But this method of scouting has been out there already. You're not the first one to pass along this method.

Smile Re: What's your scouting method?

I'd love to endorse one of these other methods, and say they're better or easier or yields better players than my way, but I just can't do it and be honest...

Are you playing for more than one season? Yes. Good... This is what you do then:

All 23 and 24 year old rookies, you kiss them goodbye and wish them luck playing on your rivals team(s)..

Now you go through scouting just the youngest players(more time for cheap development, since everything is more expensive once your player is 25+ y.o.), so I alway just go through the 20 year olds first and foremost.

QB: I scout one thing, that's acceleration, I can guesstimate everything else from projected round, scheme and player type(takes experience, but I have it).

RB: I scout strength first, because it's only 5 points; if its a "B", "C" or "D" I might investigate further... By further I mean I'll scout speed, elusiveness and juke move(the 3 most expensive upgrades)... Only rarely do I draft RBs anyway, mostly I'll get them from FA or I move a WR to RB.

FB: don't scout, save points

WR: recently I've been scouting "route runner" type WRs the same way I'd scout RBs, except don't scout strength(because its usually "F"), because these are the guys that make the best RBs, once you swap their positions. For actually finding a WR, I look for size(6'4"+) and speed(must be an "A"). The WR's that are 6'5"+ with "B" speed and "C" strength, that are labeled as Red Zone Threats are the guys you want to draft and move like so WR > HB > FB > TE, and make them the best TE in the league... Moving along now.

TE: I don't scout(because they are all so generic), so don't waste your points. Look above (in WR) for how to "make" a beast TE, because you won't find one at TE.

LT, LG, C, RG and RT: I usually only scout ACC, if its a "B" then i sometimes(only on lower round projected guys) scout strength, if strength is an "A", that's the guy you want. "B" ACC and "B" strength guys aren't bad either.

LE, RE: ACC and STR; I look for "A" ACC and "B" STR, pass on all others.

DT: same as DE, throw them out once they don't show "A" acceleration.

OLB & MLB: look for "prototypes"; that'll save you some scouting points... The best guys are 20 y.o. Prototype players with an "A" in Speed and Hit Power... Use judgement and go from there.

CB: this ones tricky, but I've perfected it to where I will only scout "strength" on 3-5 CBs in an entire class and still usually pull in the 97+ speed CBs. HINT: look for prototypes, especially ones with "B" Strength!.. Got a 20 year old, 97 speed, Superstar Development trait guy in the 5th round by this method, only used 5 scouting XP and I knew he was my guy.

FS, SS: scout Speed and Hit Power; must be "A" & "A" for me to snatch up.

K, P: please tell me no one actually wastes scouting points on these nobodies!

Anyway, moral of the story is I usually get everyone I want(even in online leagues), at least one superstar guy, and still have 4000 or so scouting points left over, which lately I've been using the left overs(the bulk of the XP) to go back and either scout the personality("B" or better, especially in the later rounds signals a higher dev trait) or development of the players I have pinpointed as studs/the ones I want the most.

Scouting intangible is quite literally a waste of 25 points per player and is nowhere near the most efficient way to scout anything(it's basically just DUMB LUCK that 95% of your "B" intangible guys are top 2 round guys, as obviously the top 60 guys will have better intangibles than everyone else... Oh, combine that with the fact that most, if not all SS Dev guys are found in the top two rounds[basically making it coincidence, that "B" intangible guys overlap and are, alot of the time, the same guys as high development guys]. I've done a study of 6 draft classes and recorded all the results, so if you would like to argue that point with me, do your homework first!).

Congrats at now being ten steps ahead of everyone else when it comes to scouting/drafting talent.
