Talking Points - Corner Kicks

I like that we have the option to run a play from corner kicks this year. I am curious about how to best take advantage of this new option. I have some questions about what to look for in each of the plays, the timing and direction from the player taking the kick, and how to attack the ball whence it is in the air.

I know that the four plays are "Edge of Box Run" / "Near Post" / "Far Post" / "Crowd the Keeper" ... and I have also seen some chatter about doing a short pass to a teammate and then playing the ball into the box.

After I select which play I am going to run ... when should I actually begin the power-up for my corner kick taker?I know that the kick taker will raise his arm, and then lower it back again ... do I begin the power-up with the arm goes up, when it is on its way back down, after it is down again?

What is the "right" amount of power-up? I imagine that the answer to this varies depending on which play I have selected? What about the direction ... where should I be aiming with the kick in each situation? Do I need to use the curve/spin with the L-Stick (toward the goal / away from the goal) on any of these kicks? And is there a bias/preference for using a left-footed or right-footed kicker?

How about each of the four choices ... what is happening in each of the options? Are all of them designed to end with a headed shot? Or should a teammate pass on to another teammate?

-----

Also ... any thoughts on the short corner? A short ground pass to a teammate ... who then does what to best get the ball into the box?

-----

I have lots of other questions with this ... I will have to think more carefully about them later ... and add more to this thread as I go. I just wanted to get this up and running ... and see if any of you would be able to give me some good tips of things to do / look for / practice.

Thanks!

Re: Talking Points - Corner Kicks

I really don't have much strategy when it comes to corner kicks. I alternate between the four options throughout the game. I lean more to "Crowd The Keeper" than any of the other.

What I do do however is Go "All Out Attack" before taking the corner kick. My players will move closer toward the 18 yard box. When defending corner kicks I "Park The Bus". I rarely concede from a set piece. It could be just luck or "Parking The Bus" really helps.

A play I like works really well with a strong shooting Defensive mid like Gerrard. First you Crowd the keeper to draw attention away from the edge of the box, Then pick out your CDM with a howitzer at the edge of the box. Get him a cross with about 2 bars of power to leave him the option to first touch shoot, or take a touch then pick a corner to blast it in.

Near-post, hold L1 and mash square (PS4) quickly three times. The ball will rocket about two feet in front of the near post. Proper aim and timing will net you a goal, another corner kick, or a miss off the post. Then, when the defense defends it later, call the same near-post play; however, this time, go towards the back-middle of the box to one of your CBs.

Re: Talking Points - Corner Kicks

Can I get an answer about the timing for the corner kick taker? Does his arm raise have anything to do with it? I feel like my teammates in the box should begin their run before/during/after the arm raise ... and I should try to send in the pass at the "right" time.

Is there any information somewhere about *which* teammate I should be targeting for each of the corner kick options? Should the pass come in near the goal or at the edge of the 6-yard-box or at the edge of the 18-yard-box? Is there a way to "muscle for position" while the ball is in the air? What is the right timing for the header ... how close should the ball be to my player when I power-up the shot?

Re: Talking Points - Corner Kicks

Few things: the Near Post + L1+ squaresquaresquare works really well, especially if you've got someone with high striking (duh) because they should be close enough to the net where that "poaching" aspect of goal scoring comes into play.

As far as the timing, and this is only based off of observation, as soon as the taker raises his arm, you should see the teammates start to move. So, ideally, I always try to picking kicking the ball as his arm is dropping, so you have teammates moving the defenders as the ball travels through the air.

Lastly, if I have a CB who has "aerial threat," sometimes I won't even call a play –– if you have enough curve, typically 2 bars of power and some sort of spin on the ball is all they'll need to make a play on it.

Good luck!

Re: Talking Points - Corner Kicks

I still have had no luck with corner kicks. And I am really bad at scoring goals - so getting better at corner kicks could go a long way at improving my chances to steal a win every one in a while.

I still have no idea where I should be aiming, with how much power, at what time ... for each of the four corner kick plays. Am I trying to get a header or volley or a regular shot?

Is there a preference for a right-footed / left-footed kicker based on which play I select, or which side of the field I am taking the kick from? In-swinging vs. out-swinging?

Any suggestions for something I can read or useful youtube videos to watch?

Re: Talking Points - Corner Kicks

I posted a thread that showed how the players stand under each corner kick set you choose.

Maybe I can find it.
