How do My League player retirements work?

I've played in 2 My league seasons and have to restart both of them because of some crazy player retirements. My first ML, Kobe retired after year one at 36. Definitely unlikely since he has 1 more year on his contract but the crazier thing was Steve Nash deciding to give it another year despite a neck injury i gave him that lasted the max 480 days.

My second ML i decided to decrease some players birth years to see if they'd retire at years end (Hedo Turkoglu, Nazr Mohammed, Jannero Pargo, Nash to 58 years old). I couldnt really tell if it changed much. Is it just completely random?

That's weird man, I have played about 13-15 Myleagues and I haven never seen Kobe leave after 1, or seen Nash stay :/
