The Leftovers (HBO)

Co-created by one of the dudes who brought you Lost.

The basic premise is that one day (October 14th), 2% of the world's population just up and vanished. Science can't explain it, religion can't explain it.

The pilot just aired on HBO. I liked it, but also I have no idea what the **** I just watched. Not that I'm expecting answers in the pilot, but I guess I'd have liked to have been more gradually thrown into the mysteries surrounding this than just chucked in head first. This felt more like the third episode of a show than the first.

But, whatever, it's intriguing as **** and once the initial disorientation of the plot wears off it grabs you.

Itll be interesting how they make multiple episodes/seasons of this story. I dont see the longevity and this has "we'll never tell you what actually happened" written all over it.

It was a good show though even though Im not too sure what is going on.

This is an adaptation of a book, so at least for now the book plot will be the longevity, and the creators have been upfront about the fact that they won't ever explain what actually happened. So if people are looking for those kinds of answers, this won't be the show for them.

So...... Lost?

EDIT: Just finished up the pilot and I'm in for a few episodes. I'm not really confused, but I do wish they had done a bit more character development. I'm keeping up my guard with this one because of the Lost connection. Fool me once.....

This has Lost clown food written all over it. Instead of seeing his dead dad in Gilligan shoes, he sees a Deer. I'll watch it and it will probably be entertaining, but don't expect to get any answers, they will ride this out as long as they can going around in circles.

Re: The Leftovers (HBO)

There are no answers because the premise of the show isn't to know what happened to those people, it's to see what happens to the people leftover.

So, if your'e expecting answers, you should probably stop watching. This isn't Lost. There are no promises or questions to resolve.

As for me, having read the book, I'm more interested in seeing how long it takes before they jump away from the book's central characters. I haven't seen the pilot yet, but the book isn't exactly very long, nor does it offer any answers.

What exactly is the end-game? Will there be some overarching mythology at some point or are we just following people living? I'm okay with the latter (many shows have followed this formula and done well for themselves), just curious the direction of the series.
